LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

A Stroll in the Woods - My World Colorado

Last week, a friend and I hiked the Peaks Trail
from Peak 7 in Breckenridge to Peak 1 in Frisco.

The trail begins along Cucumber Creek,
at about 9,600' in elevation.

We hike through lush greenery.

Lodgepole Pines tower above us.

Old Man's Beard Lichen,
eerily back-lighted by the sun,
hangs from some of the trees.

Wooden bridges span the three streams along the route.

Cucumber Creek, Bartons Creek, and Miners Creek
all tumble past the trail.

Moist areas foster the growth of fungi.
Here, Puff Balls nestle on the forest floor.

Intricate umbels of Cow Parsnip
raise their drying heads.

As temperatures drop to freezing overnight,
grasses turn red under the groves of aspens.

Leaves are quickly changing from green to lime, to gold.

Asters bloom in profusion.

Purple, white, and yellow wildflowers
lead us down the trail.

Silvery stumps are Nature's sculptures.

The majestic old-growth forest
is quiet and mostly deserted.

The hike ends at 9,100' in elevation.
The trail follows the contours
of the Tenmile Range.

It is listed as "Moderate" in the guide books.

However, since it never exceeds 10,100' in elevation
and is mostly a gently rolling dirt path,
the hike is easily accomplished if
a person is able to walk about 7 - 10 miles.

Since we started on Peak 7 instead of Peak 8,
we walked 7.5 miles in 4 hours,
taking time to enjoy the views and our snacks.

In the summer, the Peaks Trail is popular
with hikers, runners, and mountain bikers.
In the winter it is a cross country ski trail.

The Peaks Trail offers a beautiful stroll in the woods.

  3. Hi Barb

this was a beautifully different walk through the trees and the colours of the wildflowers. You must enjoy the flatter walks for change and also the last days of summer while it is still green and vibrant...

    Happy days

  4. Your world holds beauty and serenity. The flora are very beautiful. Great shots and they tell a story of beauty and grandeur. Hehehe, I am just curious, did you bring a tripod for the first photo? I thought this will make you laugh when you read this in the morning! I hope you and Pop-pop had a great time with the kids and grand kids. Cheers with your morning tea!

  5. Another unbelievably beautiful hike - the trails are very well looked after with the wooden bridges in great condition. I'm impressed you know the names of all the plants. No Burger King along the way, thankfully.

  6. Very interesting Barb. I would like to venture on a mountain hike like that. Makes you feel the winner on top of the trail with all those beautiful trees and wildflowers. I love the stumps and the one you have shown here looks like there's a bird lying on top. Can you see it?

  7. As usual I loved your hike Barb. But 7 to 10 miles! I know I couldn't do that. I am getting a shot in my knee tomorrow, maybe after that!!

I love creeks and streams. Found memories from childhood! So your video was a nice treat!

  9. Hello this morning Barb...
I enjoyed your beautiful stroll in the "quiet" forest...made me wonder if it were before or after your weekend with the grandkids...I have 3 creeks to explore on the property...but none are quite as wonderful as yours...mine are a little more tame. Aren't the puff balls the softest things to touch?
I always enjoy your "hikes and strolls" Barb, I think I will go take a quiet walk in the woods myself...tall trees give me pleasure...and moments to meditate on bigger things!

    Smiles to you Barb,
    Wanda

  11. What a wonderful way to spend the weekend, with a friend and enjoying such beautiful scenery. Are there any bears in those woods? Or mountain lions? I am such a wimp, I would be running through the mountains because I would fear something to jump out of the brush at me!

  19. This is a beautiful hike. I want to do it. I am going to check out all the Colorado hiker blogs and plan a trip. This is one Hubby will like, it has bridges rather than bolder hopping across the streams.

  20. What a wonderful hike! I wish I had been there but thanks for taking me along on your adventures thru your blog. I especially loved the tree stump, the cow parsnip and the Puff Balls (I have never seen them before!)

How I wish I could travel on your hikes with you in person but will just have to be satisfied to share your photos.

One of my favorite sounds... the flowing waters of a creek... a place I could stay for a long time... to think, pray and just BE ~
