LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Breckenrige in Spring - Mellow Yellow

Breckenridge, first inhabited in 1859
when gold was discovered,
is a quaint Victorian town in a valley
surrounded by high peaks.

Among other bright colors, yellow is a recurring hue.
Here is the back of the Information Center
as seen from the River Walk.

This purple Bed and Breakfast is
"complemented" by a neighbor's yellow dandelions!

Saint John the Baptist Episcopal Church - yellow -

as is this tiny eatery on Main Street.

Amazing Grace Vegetarian Restaurant
has a fake front
like many of the historic buildings.

Even the flowers have a little

or a lot of yellow!

But , here is where we're headed
on this early Sunday morning -

Have a Mellow Yellow Day!

Spring at High Altitude - Sky Watch

Spring brings storms to the high country.
What starts as rain in town
may become hail, sleet, or snow
at over 10,000' where I live.

I had more than that tiny patch of blue
in the sky when I began working in the yard.
Storms move quickly over the mountain ranges
and temperatures drop rapidly.
It went from 61 to 42 degrees in about an hour.

I was gone for a few days,
and in that time,
the porcupine came calling.

Since bears have already been sighted
in the neighborhood,
I wear this bell when I'm gardening or hiking.

Yes, I've heard the joke about bears and bells.
I've also had close encounters -
I take any precautions I can.

This isn't pretty!
It's my back garden
after the snow has finally melted off it.
Somehow, the perennials are green and growing
from the instant the snow is gone.
However, it will take a lot of work
in the next few days,

so that in a few weeks I have this....

and can enjoy this!

For now, I have a fire in the fireplace.
I think I'll pour a glass of wine.
Tomorrow is another day...

Meanwhile, I hope you visit some other skies

Snowmelt in Breckenridge, CO - My World

It rained in my world
the entire Memorial Weekend.

Stormy evening sunsets,

morphed by morning into rain clouds
over the Ten Mile Range .

The back garden still has some snow.

When the rain stops briefly,
we walk the back trail.
We want to see how much snow
still remains over 10,000.'

A hundred yards from the house,
we enter "Spooky Woods."
Dead trees creak in the wind.

.
The higher we walk,
navigating around snow
becomes more difficult.

The last beaver pond is overflowing.
Peak Ten ski trails are still snow-covered.

Back home, the swing is clear of snow.

Our water feature
- which we call "the stream" -
is up and running.

Some Daffodils, Snow in Summer, and Dragon's Blood
grow in the front garden.

Waldo, the tree nymph, has exchanged
his red winter scarf for a colorful hat.

He's smiling as usual.
This is spring at high altitude.
Soon enough, we'll have wildflowers and perennials.

Good Luck - Mellow Yellow!

Our daughter made a decision to stop smoking. She started her abstinence on May 22. We're hoping that her strong will and considerable determination help her achieve success. Meanwhile, her son, Jean-Philippe, is having a ball during a trip to FL last month.

Good Luck, Corey!

Sunsets in Breckenridge - SkyWatch

Since arriving home, we've been treated
to beautiful evening skies.
We can view the spectacle from our Great Room.

Some days melt meekly into the high peaks
(which hold snow all year).

Other evenings showcase a fiery alpenglow.

Sometimes, we enjoy a combination of the two.

Meanwhile, as we rest and regroup from our trip,
Lucinda B. Rabbit is
hatching a new scheme.

Lucinda has decided that her blogging fame
should be parlayed into a storybook.
She believes the Grandchildren
would cherish such a book.

Even before we left CA,
she began her memoir.

We'll see how that goes...

Home to CO - My World

After leaving CA, we drove to CO
where we rode our bikes
through the National Monument.

Rim Rock Drive climbs
from about 4,000' to 7,000' in elevation
along 20 miles
of beautiful canyon and desert vistas.
Can you see Bob just before the switchback?

Hiking trails and wildflowers are plentiful.

We rested awhile at the top
enjoying the views.
Spring temperatures are mild -
this day was in the mid-60's with some wind.
Pedaling up is strenuous.
Riding down is fast!

Over the weekend,
we met our sons and their families
in Aspen.
Snow is nearly melted
from the ski runs.
Trees and flowers are blooming.

We enjoy Aspen in the off-season
because it's nearly deserted.

We took long walks.

The Roaring Fork is
high with snow-melt.

We played in the park.

We climbed!

We swam.

Bob, Jim, and Gregg rode
in the Independence Pass Bike Race,
going from 7,000' in Aspen
to 14,000' at the top of the pass.

There was also a criterion race in town.

Since Aspen is known to have roaming bears,
we were cautious when sightseeing.

On Monday, Bob and I left Aspen
to ride the bike path
from Carbondale to Basalt.

It follows the Roaring Fork River
along an old railroad bed.

Our friend, Barb, joined us for the ride.

By the time we arrived home Monday night,
we were tired from all the travel and exercise.

Vacations are fun,
but there is nothing quite like
HOME!

Dawn to Dark CA - Sky Watch Friday

Good Morning San Francisco!

(all photos enlarge)

While the moon still hangs
over the Sausalito hills,

Scullers row toward the city.

Haze begins to lift

And the early-day gray

Turns to twilight blue,

And finally to moon-glow

Shedding its silvery light across the Bay.

Goodnight California and Goodbye.

We left CA on Wednesday
for our return trip to CO.
