We spent weeks this spring watching the sun set over the Pacific.
Just to be fair, we thought we'd spend some time watching the sun rise over the Atlantic!

Sunrise over Atlantic - Melbourne Beach, FL
We braved the heat and humidity to walk the beach each morning.
Brown Pelicans scanned the surf for breakfast.

Nesting site of Loggerhead Turtle, Melbourne Beach, FL
Loggerhead turtle nesting sites are common along a 20 mile stretch of beach starting at Melbourne, FL. Beach-front hotels and homes are under light restrictions during the months (March through October) when the turtles nest and hatch. The huge female turtles come onto the beach in darkness to deposit their eggs before returning to the ocean. Each circular "nest" may hold 80-120 eggs. In 10 weeks the hatchlings will attempt to scurry back to the sea. Only 1 in 1000 will survive to adulthood. The adult females return to their original natal sites to deposit their eggs. Each daybreak during our stay, there were new tracks and nests along the shoreline. In 2010, over 14,400 nests were counted along this stretch of beach.

Amanda and Mitch
The real reason for our visit was to join with family and friends to witness a marriage. Our nephew, Mitch, met Amanda while teaching in a program for autistic teenagers. Their wedding was a wonderful celebration of love and commitment. (Also, it entailed lots of dancing and fun!)

Fairy Slipper Orchid (Calypso Orchid)
Now, we're back in Breckenridge. The snow has finally melted in our yard. (However, the high peaks and flanks of the mountains still have a blanket of snow.) Wildflowers are everywhere. The delicate Fairy Slipper Orchids waited to bloom until I returned. My perennial gardens are green and growing. I've begun to hike and bike. I'm so very happy to be back in the mountains. When I wake and see the unfolding landscape from my house, I think:
"Life has been good to me."
I hope you're finding at least one good thing to celebrate each day, too.

Lovely photos, Barb. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like the heat and humidity of Florida wasn't too bad! :D :D :D Lovely images! Congratulations to the newly weds.
ReplyDeleteThe sun looked so far away in that delicate pink sunrise, Barb! Congratulations to the lovely couple on their marriage. Our Amanda's wedding is Saturday!
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful to see your post again Barb! I was wondering, and was beginning to worry that you had flown too far again from FL! Your beautiful sunrise over Atlantic and the pelicans sure is celebrating their marriage! Congratulations Mitch and Amanda!!
ReplyDeleteHere in Nara, it is raining today, but I am looking up the gray sky thinking of going out with my green rain shoes, green umbrella and pink rain coat....to enjoy rainy days this afternoon!
Have a good weekend,Barb and Bob!
Tomoko.
Hi Barb!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if we would get a peek at the bride and groom ~ how beautiful they look!
your fairy slipper orchid is so pretty ... what a name!
Barb, I am totally in love with Whole Foods... I want to go there every day! I must email them and recommend our area. There's one in NYC which we can get to by train from Amanda's apt. But, oh I do want one right down the road! I don't think I would ever cook again! Everything looks so clean and perfectly presented. The ingredients to all of their prepared foods are just like "Mom's home cookin'"
Well, Barb, I hope you and your family and your 88 year old father-in-law have a fantastic 4th of July!
I'm glad you had wonderful travels!
God Bless you always,
Maria
I'm glad you had time to enjoy the beach on both coasts this summer. Fascinating to see the turtle tracks from their sojourn onto shore to make their nests.
ReplyDeleteWe see the calypso orchids in Utah high country forests, too. It's one of my favorite flowers.
Hope you have a great 4th enjoying the mountains.
I love your look on life, and through the lens.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back to blogland. It is great to know that you were able to have such a great family time at the wedding in Florida.
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job of photographing the Fairy Slipper Orchid. It is just beautiful.
Your beach photos are just wonderful - the textures in the first one - the foam of the water - it is just breath-taking. I love the point of view of the other two beach shots. You know how to share the beauty of the places you visit. Glad the wedding trip was fun. I hope their lives will be filled with beauty.
ReplyDeleteAll around nice trip. Very interesting about the loggerhead turtles. What a great couple in the marriage.
ReplyDeletegreat photos- making me long for a beach trip. love the turtle story, and it sounds like the wedding was all that one hopes a wedding will be- a celebration. always nice to be home, though. enjoy those mountains!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Barb! Like Tomoko, I’ve been wondering how far you’ve been! “Heat and humidity”..., I guess you could taste a bit of our summer, though ours would be more scorching and sweltering. I enjoyed each and every breathtaking photo, I especially like the pictures of the sea, beach, and of clouds. To be a witness of a young couple’s new start is such a blessing. “Happy wedding” from me, too.
ReplyDeleteNumerous sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs in Yakushima island, Japan. As the numbers of tourist have increased in recent years and development has proceeded, the sand dunes have rapidly disappeared where sea turtles lay their eggs. Sea turtles instinctively return to the same sand dunes every year, so many people are concerned. I hope the same thing never happen in your part.
Have a restful weekend.
Yoko
What stunning shots. And what a great place to have a wedding.
ReplyDeleteThis is a stunning post, Barb, with your glorious photos. The sunrise is just wonderful, with that quiet strip of salmon running down from a pindot sun. The beach, mmm. The cloud with birds in flight, tremendous. The turtle nesting site! I'm astonished by the stats you shared.
ReplyDeleteAnd then those capezio shell streamers, they just send me. I want some. :-) I can imagine how beautifully they whisper when blowing in the breeze like that, if you listen very carefully and hear them above the surf (and wedding vows).
Oh my goodness Barb, those coast shots are simply STUNNING!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good looking couple and such a lovely setting for a wedding.
ReplyDeleteThose turtles are amazing. I have seen them lay the eggs and have gone on safaris with the Game and Fish folks to rescue the babies that head for condo lights after hatching, mistaking them for the moon.
What a mortality rate.
What a beautiful bride and her gown is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteFascinating about the turtles.
Welcome back.
When I read the title of your post, I thought, oh no, not Florida in mid-summer! I lived there for a few decades and mid-summer really wasn't a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteBut I went to my niece's wedding just a few weeks ago on the east coast of Florida, so I understand! What a beautiful couple...
I feel especially blessed this morning after reading your beautiful post!
xxoo,
RMW
What a lovely place to get married, they are a beautiful couple. Wonderful pictures!
ReplyDeleteYou broght back some lovely photos, but I know you are a mountain woman, for sure!
ReplyDeleteHave a great long weekend.
Beach and sand and then snow. What a change, each one welcome. Great photographs.
ReplyDeleteThe chance to travel is a wonderful perk of life well lived. Your pictures are always so well done.
ReplyDeleteBarb, sounds like you had a wonderful trip. I love the loggerhead tracks. They're adorable. Have a wonderful weekend. Carol
ReplyDeleteWelcome home! What a great trip. I bet the sunset was warmer on the East Coast! I hope on our next roadtrip (or yours) that we'll be in the same timezone at some point in time ;>)...
ReplyDeleteWe are in Oregon now and life is good here too.
what a beautiful trip, in so many ways, to florida !!
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing bits and pieces of it with us....happy weekend....xo
Ah, wonderful Barb...you do get around don't you?
ReplyDeleteLove the wedding!

Gorgeous, gorgeous photos Barb! I'm glad you had a fun trip and come back to such beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Those beach pictures are breathtaking! I'm sure you're glad to be home and out of that humidity! I'm always happiest when I'm home.
ReplyDeleteHi Barb,
ReplyDeleteyour photography is stellar as usual! oh, those little sea turtles don't have very good odds, do they? congrats to your nephew... looks like a special time. In answer to your question- yes, mainly working & staying indoors. Wouldn't want to hike w/ this air quality... & all the National Forests in the area are closed anyhow due to stage 3 restrictions... & they just closed all the hiking trails right here in town (Dale Ball trails.) I leave on tues for San Diego... I can't wait.
ps- jealous of your wildflowers... we had such a dry winter that when I went into the mountains a few weeks ago, nary a flower...
Hi there sweet lady friend!
ReplyDeleteGald you snow has melted...and our rain has stopped too-FINALLY- '~"
Wow all your moments captured on film, are so soothing..isn't it different to have the sun "rise" on the ocean?
Those Pelicans in the clouds..I would buy that in a heart beat, should you make a card!
Your wedding sounded very nice..how special to witness family~
XO

It sounds as though you had a wonderful time. Yea.
ReplyDeleteAlso yea that the fairy slipper waited for you. I would be so sad to miss it one spring or summer. Something so special about it.
Congratulations on the lovely wedding of your nephew! I see happy aura being radiated from them.
ReplyDeleteI love the lace-like waves lapping against the shore in the first photo. Graceful and stunning shot of the sunrise!!
And what a harsh reality about sea turtles!
You said "The snow has finally melted in our yard." But in Nara I have already suffered summer exhaustion. All I want to have is that kind of climate. I am not good under summer heat.
Barb, have a great day!
THAT was beautiful. I think I'll be stopping by your blog again in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi Barb! What amazing photos! From sea to mountains...you are blessed with fantastic views and adventures!
ReplyDeleteWe just rolled in last night from our Sierras..Kirkwood finally had corn snow, and ran a lift for the weekend! Shorts and skis, and lots of smiles :)
Hugs,
Sierra Rose & Kristin
Congratulations to Amanda and Mitch! That is a lovely picture of the two of them. I enjoyed your beach pictures too .. such a contrast from what you saw when you returned to your home!
ReplyDeleteHaha! With every picture, my "wow! woah!" exclamation got bigger! The pelicans behind the clouds are amazing and those turtle tracks are something. And what a beautiful bride!
ReplyDeleteNow you get to return home to green and wildflowers. Life is good!
Barb these are all just stunning. I love the light in this wildflower.
ReplyDeleteYour sunrise took my breath away.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images of Florida. As much as I admire the artistry in the picture of the clouds and pelicans, looking at it brings back memories of the heat and humidity of Florida.
