Our friend, Frank, died on July 21. He was one of my Husband's best friends. Frank was an athlete, a philosopher, a listener, and a learner. He was a kind and admirable man. On the last night of his life, he became agitated, wanting to speak to my husband. His wife called, and Bob got on the phone. At first, Bob couldn't understand what Frank was trying to tell him, but suddenly, quite clearly, Frank said,
"I'm on the bike."
Those were the last words he uttered to anybody.
Frank died at dawn the next morning, in his own bed, surrounded by his family.
We imagine him pedaling into the sky, waving goodbye to all of us.
The thought makes us smile through our grief.

There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind. - Hannah Senesh, poet, playwright, and paratrooper (1921-1944)
Thank you to my Blog Friend, Tammie, who sent the quote to me.

Barb,
ReplyDeleteso sorry to hear of the loss of your & Bob's dear friend. Seeing him on the slopes of Winter this year tells me it must've been rather sudden. Though it is a part of life, I never quite deal with death well, loss is such a difficult thing, particularly of those near & dear to us. I do absolutely love that quote, and it seems quite fitting for the tribute to your friend.
I'm so sorry to hear about Bob's friend Frank. I can't imagine what your husband must have felt knowing Frank's last words.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Frank knew where he was going. Bless him.
Love Di ♥
Luckely you mention that the picture was taken in the winter. Here in Europe it can't stop raining. I almost thought that it was snowing again.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Filip
My condolences to you and your husband and to your friend's family. Another star in the sky!

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear friend. Your husband and Frank must have had a very special bond. I love how he said he was "on the bike." I remember my father saying he was on the train just before he died. To me it conveyed he was on a journey, and that even though he was leaving us, he was ok.
ReplyDeleteYour tribute is touching and poignant.
I am very sorry for your friend’s loss.
ReplyDeleteIt is very sad to say good by to our beloved ones.
The last of his word “I am on the bike” makes my eyes tears.
....I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die....
(From A Thousand Winds)
I am thinking of you, Barb and Bob.
Tomoko.

ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for your loss, and for your husband's. Hoping you continue to find comfort in your friend's last words, as well as in the memories of the light he brought into your lives.
ReplyDeleteIt is all around us. So it seems. I am so sorry Barb. It has been too long since I visited and I just today, read 3 weeks worth. Within a week there has been 3 tragic deaths of someones spouse. Life is so fragile and I sometimes become a little overwhelmed with it and want to do nothing...which I know...is not healthy. I can't tell you how many times I have hugged and cuddled and told my sweetheart how much I love him the past 2 weeks. Then I get up each morning put my feet on the ground and God for another day together...
ReplyDeleteI am so very sorry that your friend passed away. I have to say, however, that the quote "I'm on the bike" made me smile. I imagine that those might be my last words too.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful quote that I'll remember. It sounds like it truly applies to your friend.
