LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

High Altitude Fall - My World

Fall is a brief but spectacular season in Summit County, CO.
Aspens glow against the blue Colorado sky.
Bright hips ornament the wild roses.
Grasses in shades of sienna sway in the breeze.

As aspens quake, gold flutters down.

Fall is the bridge between summer and winter.

The landscape changes day by day.
Fall's beauty is radiant but transient.

Waldo smiles in approval.

We're celebrating fall at high altitude.

This is my world.

  2. I envy your backyard! The golden leaves are sought after by photographers!

    I concur with Waldo!

  3. The aspen were just starting to turn when we left the cabin last week. I suspect that when we go back in 10 days to close for the winter, many aspen will have already lost their leaves.
    Where did the summer go?

  5. Hi, Barb! I wonder which is the shortest at your mountains, spring, summer, or autumn? Autumn foliage is fabulous, but there’s something lonely in them, the sense of transience and upcoming onslaught of the winter. Waldo looks happy wearing gold-yellow wreath and also how happy to be blessed with purple sky at the end of the day. I‘ve enjoyed walking through the shades of yellow under the blue skies listening to your words, Barb.

In my part of the world, I’m enjoying the gradual cooling and the changing colors. Autumn makes up for the heat of summer.

    Have a nice week.

  11. Wonderful Fall in Colorado -- we have been there at this time of year and it is truly amazing!

I posted pictures of some rose hips today too -- we have those, but not the wonderful golden aspens.

  12. Fall is my favorite time of year because it seems to unveil the mystery of life around us. As the leaves drop and change into beautiful hues there is hope that the tired and worn will be renewed. :)

  17. Wow, so different from our red hued fall, but just as beautiful.

    Waldo looks good in yellow.

Our nights are only down to the 50's, and the only frost warnings are in the mountains.

  19. I love fall here in Colorado, but since I'm on call this weekend (I'm a software engineer) I won't be able to get out and see it at its peak. But I'm enjoying your photos a lot!

Our leaves have definitely started to change here in the Colorado Springs area, but of course since we've got such a variation in altitude it's variable. I was in Pueblo last weekend and it was like summer, but higher up on the Peak I'm sure there's lots of yellow. I've even seen some yellow in town.

  20. I hope someday to see the Colorado Rockies when the Aspens are bright yellow. Great photographs of them.

  25. . . . and a great season to celebrate it is! Wonderful photos of your glorious clear air that defines everything to perfection. If such beauty were not so transient, we may take it for granted, as it is, we really appreciate this most beautiful of seasons.

  26. Barb,
You are enjoying wonderful autumn - serene sky, fresh air and autumn foliage! What beautiful gifts nature in Summit County gives to people!
Especially I love the third photo where grasses are swaying in cool breeze. What I feel autumn the most is in wind or breeze.
    Have a great week!
    Best wishes,

  29. It's amazing how fast the summer goes by at high altitude, isn't it? It seems like just yesterday that your yard was still buried in snow. The aspens are gorgeous, an artistic bridge to the starkness of winter. Gorgeous photos, all of them.

  30. I got to see some of your beautiful state first hand. Drove up to Pikes Peak. WOW!
Your photos are beautiful as always.
I should be back to posting probably on Monday.

  31. Fall has taken hold here, too. It has a different feel from the golds of Colorado. I think there is something special about seasons that have day to day changes - always something new to observe and appreciate - even when it is the slow decay of autumn.
