LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Hurray for SNOW!

Columbine holding its seeds.
This morning, after about 30 hours of intermittent snow, we woke to a glittering world.

The blue spruce balanced fluffy pillows (which sometimes dropped unexpectedly) as we passed underneath.
The sun shone golden on Lehman creek.
The frigid water formed ice around the rocks. The low was 1 degree (F) overnight.
The ski area was busy making its own snow to add to that already on the ground.
We walked the 2 miles into town to get our mail. A bit of fall color still remained.
Returning home, I inspected my gardens.
The Dianthus wore a wizard's hat.
The Shasta Daisy looked lovely against its jeweled backdrop.
The seed pods enchanted me.
Waldo assured me that today was the optimum time.
He is never wrong.
I spent a happy hour flinging seeds mixed with sand.
I scattered thousands of hopes and dreams for next summer's blooms upon the snow.

  1. No! Not yet. The snow is so beautiful but it brings with it the cold. I don't want the cold to come. Not yet.

  2. Wow - how utterly gorgeous and magical! Your garden looks as if it is covered in diamonds.

Last year we had snow on October 15. This year it's still mild and plus temperatures...

  3. There's something magical about the incandescent reflection of light on the snow.

Should I guess your feet at itching to ski?

Nice to see a little touch of golden leaves.

Oh Barb... I want to pass along a special ~ a very special thank you ~ for the apron and oven mitt! Doreen told me the whole story this past weekend while we visited our father. She gave me a gift to open and a sweet note to read. How lovely of you! I will tell you that she truly appreciated your suggestion. It is perfect with her store name!

  7. Barb you are very clever at capturing little vignettes and wrapping the story around them so that we experience a snippet of your world.
Your shots are as clear as the air, the contrasts brilliant today in the snow but best of all they have character...they are not just pretty pictures.

I saw your comment on one of Kat's texture players' pages. I have just set up a blog to play with my camera more...and added to the above.

  15. Barb, I figured you all were getting a lot of snow! We got about a foot I believe in the mountains, but none in town... and our temps are in the 20's, not the single digits! I love the shot of the tree- half bare & half in fall color w/ all that snow! Happy beginning of winter- stay warm, Barb!

  21. The snow is indeed beautiful, and much more so because it is in your area and not mine. I love the idea of scattering the seeds. Brings to mind the saying, "bloom where you are planted." Enjoy the weekend.

  22. I don't know which shot I like best. Maybe, the shasta daisy.

How soon do you think the ski area will be open?
I know you are ready for that.

  24. Funny, you referred to the "pillows of snow" on the blue spruce's boughs. I always think of them as "snow bombs" that are trying to hit me on the head as I go through the forest.

It looks like your beautiful winter has truly begun. It's wonderful that you fling your seeds on that day... full of hopes for next spring.

I think that we have one more thaw here... but only time will tell!

The first photo of the columbine seed pods with snow hats really captured my imagination.

  25. Snow is glistening everywhere! I like the color of the snow you captured, bluish or purplish depending on the light and the shadow, and your description, too.

Stay warm and have a happy weekend, Barb.

  26. Such beautiful photos. But the snow just makes me cold. I'm didn't get enough of summer and am in no way ready for winter, even though you make it look and sound so appealing.
