Breckenridge Ski Area is scheduled to open Nov. 11. Obviously, more snow is needed!
Across the way is Imperial Peak which we skied with Frank last winter.
We call his widow from this spot. We share some memories.

The dangers of life are infinite, & safety is among them. Goethe
To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness. -Bertrand Russell, philosopher, mathematician, author, Nobel laureate (1872-1970)
This above all: to thine own self be true, / And it must follow, as the night the day, / Thou canst not then be false to any man. -William Shakespeare, poet and dramatist (1564-1616)
We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person. -William Somerset Maugham, writer (1874-1965)
Society is like a lawn, where every roughness is smoothed, every bramble eradicated, and where the eye is delighted by the smiling verdure of a velvet surface; he, however, who would study nature in its wildness and variety, must plunge into the forest, must explore the glen, must stem the torrent, and dare the precipice. -Washington Irving, writer (1783-1859)
"Set aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while: 'Is this the condition that I feared?'" -Seneca (1 BC - AD 65)
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. - Albert Einstein
You get your intuition back when you make space for it, when you stop the chattering of the rational mind. The rational mind doesn’t nourish you. You assume that it gives you the truth, because the rational mind is the golden calf that this culture worships, but this is not true. Rationality squeezes out much that is rich and juicy and fascinating. - Anne Lamott, (Bird by Bird)
Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could; Some blunders and absurdities crept in; Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, writer and philosopher (1803-1882)
The secret of good writing is to say an old thing in a new way or a new thing in an old way. -Richard Harding Davis, journalist and author (1864-1916)
Words are the small change of thought.
-Jules Renard, writer (1864-1910)
The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.
-Marcel Proust, novelist (1871-1922)
A word is not a crystal, transparent and unchanged, it is the skin of a living thought and may vary greatly in color and content according to the circumstances and the time in which it is used.
-Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease.
-John Muir, naturalist, explorer, and writer (1838-1914)
I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.
~John Muir, 1913, in L.M. Wolfe, ed., John Muir, John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, 1938
On the mountains of truth you can never climb in vain: either you will reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow.
-Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher (1844-1900)
to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you've held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.
"The Thing Is" by Ellen Bass, from Mules of Love.
In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.
When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body's been.
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.

A lovely remembrance, Barb.
Beautiful - the thoughts and photos. I am sure Frank would have approved. It is healing to remember a dear friend, and it is especially healing to the family to know that you remember.
A beautiful tribute to your friend, hiking and skiing buddy. The trails look so well paved, must be well traveled.
Did you get a new ski outfit?
A perfect day for a hike and a perfect place to remember an old friend.
It is so much easier to find solace in such a beautiful spot. The good memories attached to place can come alive. We carry those who are gone with us - a tribute to their impact on our lives.
Hello, Barb.
Such beautiful scenes you have shown. This is a beautiful tribute to Frank, and his widow will be delighted in this time of her mourning. It is a touching story that Frank's ashes were sprayed in such a beautiful mountains peak. To see the fourth photo, it looks like Frank is smiling in the blue sky.
Tomoko.
A wonderful way to hold the memory.
A wonderful post and a great tribute to your friend.
All your photos are stunning but that last one of the leaf on the snow is truly beautiful!
The perfect context for you remembering...
I think that calling Frank's widow from that place was . . . inspired.
It's a beautiful place, rough and hard and huge.
What a lovely "remembery" (a kid word in our family). That last picture is a miracle in itself.
Very moving, very beautiful.
Brilliant and beautiful.

Wonderful tribute. Amazing landscape all around.
I'm hoping someone will remember me when I'm gone. One never knows. This was beautiful Barb. Carol
Nice remembrance to a friend. Lots of people are doing the ash scattering thing instead of burial.
A wonderful day of remembrance indeed! And what a lovely world! Your photos are superb and what breathtaking beauty! Love those awesome BLUE skies! Thanks for sharing this with us, Barb! Hope you have a lovely week!
Sylvia
I'm glad Frank would be smiling. Lovely tribute.
Seems like the perfect forever place to me.
Your snow looks does look like sugar. What a neat contrast to that sky.
The scenery is so beautiful and a great place where your friend's ashes were left.
what a gorgeous neck of the woods you call home. and what a perfect spot for your friend to spend eternity.
A beautiful remembrance!
Greetings from Holland,

A lovely day of remembrance, Barb, We carry those we have loved forever in our hearts, but a day like this brings memories alive and is both a remembrance and a solace.
The fallen leaf in the glistening snow is a poignant reminder that all life shares a constantly transforming existence. Very nice that your friend’s ashes were sprinkled over a favorite area and embraced by the earth.
Lovely memories and a nice tribute to your friend. Gorgeous scenery and a lovely place to visit. Thanks for sharing.
That's a beautiful post. I suspect we'll see more snow this week, we could certainly use the moisture.

I can't think of a more appropriate or lovely way to remember a dear friend.
Your photos are stunning!
Barb,
Your world is already in early winter! The sky looks deeper blue. The last photo tells me autumn and winter are competing, one says too early and another says too late. I especially love this photo.
I think it is a great idea to sleep in a favorite place, being embrace by nature.
Best wishes,
keiko
very sunny images...in the Netherlands we also had a cold, but very sunny weekend! greetings+thanks for all those beautiful nature shots!
beautiful shots. It seems to be very fresh up there. But for me I hope snow can wait a while.
What a beautiful place in our world !
Beautiful and moving post. A wonderful way to remember your friend.
Looks like it was a beautiful day. What a lovely place to remember your friend, Frank. :)
A beautiful memory, most important, beautiful friendship never forgotten. You are one of a kind Barb.
Oh and the ghost town post! I loved it....I was trying to imagine being in the log cabin, ahhh just think, dirt floor, not worrying about mopping it, or dusting...the perfect life. hehehe except it was a hard life...and you don't hear too often of longevity either. I don't think I would be a good pioneer...
What a touching tribute to your friend. :)
Lovely memories of your friend. It must have been a somewhat sad day but also full of happy memories.
We are getting a big storm tonight. If it gets to you, it'll help the ski area...
Hello, Barb! Enveloped in the beautiful fall light, it must have been a bitter-sweet time with gentle memories of Frank and with the fact that he’s not around you anymore. He became one with the nature he loved. To be remembered, Frank would have been together with you smiling. Best wishes to your eternal friendship.

A nice way to remember a friend, to listen to the whispering of the wind and know he is still out there.
Just the kind of place I want my ashes scattered when I move on.
so nice barb- and just the way many of us would like to be remembered by our friends. hope you're enjoying the big storm- maybe that opening day will happen-
Wow great commemoration of your friend. So fantastic that you retraced a bit of his life and passions.
That's a gorgeous, cooling landscape. Beautiful. Thank you!
