LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Loose As a Moose

Yesterday, looking out the windows of our house,
we saw a large female Moose grazing at the edge of our property.
When we thought she'd moved away into the forest, we went outside for our daily walk.
Alert for movement, we hiked up the back trail through an area of towering old-growth trees.
Suddenly, a chittering squirrel signaled danger.
Ms. Moose was well-camauflauged amid the tall Lodgepole Pines.
She turned to watch us while I used the telephoto to take her portrait.
Moose are known to be grouchy about intrusions into their space.
Before she decided to teach us a lesson, we moved away from her, up the trail.
We ventured onto Peak 9 at the ski area where snow coverage remains sparse.

This morning, we started a new ski season on Peak 8 (where they've made snow).
Tonight, we await a winter storm that may bring high winds and heavy snow.
We have the fireplace lit. The house is cozy. We have plenty of food.
We're doing our snow dance. We hope for a blizzard.
Happy Weekend to All!

  1. What a big animal the moose is, and such a glossy coat. Is it hard work walking on these snowy trails?
You look like you are red and ready for the ski season.

  4. Beautiful, just beautiful! I wish you all the snow you could ever want! Thinking of you with that wish but also me as I know I will get to see the photos. 5. I don't usually think of moose as being pretty, but this one actually is...not as pretty as you are in red though, Barb! Hope your blizzard wishes come true.

  6. Sounds like a great day, Barb. Mrs. Moose is handsome, but I am very taken with that lovely tail on the squirrel..

  7. You look amazing! I hope you are all snuggled in tonight.

You know, I would be very frightened to see a moose out in the wild like that. They really are large animals, aren't they? My children often tell the story of coming nearly face to face with a moose while they were in the woods with their father. They were very frightened, but luckily they were able to leave the area without a problem.

  8. She really is a beauty with her brand new velvety winter coat. I'm just a sucker for these soft footed guys. I've never met a grouchy moose. In Europe they are such shy creatures.

  9. I've seen a few in Alaska, and I've seen "Moose Crossing" signs. They're interesting animals.

  10. Finally. Someone who doesn't mind a good winter storm. When I tell people I look forward to them, they look at me as if I've lost my mind. Bring on the weather...as long as I have my fireplace lit and plenty of potato leek soup : )

  12. I didn't know Moose where dangerous. I was under the impressions they were calm fluffy and cute animals. It seems I am wrong.

  16. The moose is a beauty with her winter coat. We never did see one when we were in Alaska.
I thought of you this morning when I saw pictures on the Weather Channel of snow at Breckenridge. Happy skiing.

  19. I once saw a news cast that showed a moose chasing a man right in town. At first it seemed funny till they said that the moose actually stomped and killed the man. I guess they can be grouchy and I would want a telephoto between us.
Loved the snow shot with skiis ready. Enjoy, I am envious.

  20. Snow and skiing already!?! Wow.
I have seen moose in the wild...very impressive...but never close enough to take such a picture.

  22. It sounds so cozy Barb! I love when the kids get a snow day and we're stuck inside. It's like a free day of peace! I love your moose photos and showed them to Jake. He didn't think there were moose in Colorado!
I hope you get your peaceful snow day.
    Love Di ♥

  23. I love your moose photos! What amazingly goofy animals they appear to be. But, I've read the same thing as you have - give them a wide berth!

Your squirrel photo is also delightful. His tail fur is sparkling in the sun.

It seems like a sign from the heavens that your first ski day was 11/11/11. Did you start skiing at 11:11 AM?

  24. Hi, Barb! You look so nice with the red skiing jacket, just like I had thought the last year. 11/11/11 reminded me of my mother who turned 91-year-old the other day, 11th of November.

Although I’d be frightened if I notice them so close suddenly, I got attracted by the Moose in your photos looking at their stout body-build and beautiful glossy black coat. I also like the Squirrel’s gentle gaze and its shining tail.

Happy weekend to you, too, with blizzard.

Your world is a magical one.

  28. We have plenty of deer, but no moose at all. I would love to have them, grouchy moods and all. Great photographs.

  29. You look so happy! Great shots of the moose, but my favorite photo here is the spot of purple coat in the middle of the snowy walk.

  30. I like your moose. I was excited to see them the first time when we were in Newfoundland. I had no idea how big they were until I saw one close by - 850 to 1180 pounds (385 to 534 kilos.) They have so many there that they are dangerous on the road. I read that only four moose where introduced in Newfoundland a century ago and now there are more than 150,000 – hum…

  31. Great pics of the moose. Glad you gave her some room. I love to watch them move. They are so big and gangly.

  32. Barb, I love winter, and I love you loving winter. I will sky through you. You look so beautiful standing there, so happy.

The moose is stunning, and shiny. Just lovely. I was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail when I was 20, way ahead of the pack of hikers, and I turned a bend in the forest, and there was a moose buck with humongous antlers. We stood within twenty feet of each other, staring. I don't think I understood the danger until later. When he loped off, he sounded like an avalanche.

  33. What an exciting life you lead.
It probably seems normal to you, but to me it is exceptional. A moosewiht shiny fur on your doorstep and skiing in the sun, not too far from home, thick snow in November and a cosy chome to look out over all that drama. Thank you for giving us this outing.

  34. I'm not sure I would like to meet Ms Moose so close at hand. Enjoy your ski season - and your cosy fire.

  35. Ms. Moose is a beauty.
I way jealous to see you out on skis already. Yeah! Our big snow came and went. Temps back in the 60s :(

  36. Love the moose shots -- but the walk along the trail shot is my favorite. I'm speechless! :)

  37. The purple jacket against the white snow is every bit as stunning as that moose. (OK, if I saw a moose that close I would be ecstatic with joy!) Great shots.

  38. Hi Barb!
Wow... what a creature the moose is!
"If You Give a Moose a Cookie..."
    it had better be big!
    {love those books!}

You look so happy and really so at home with your skis and in the snow!
Wishing you a grand time this winter enjoying it all!

  39. Wandering the woods and being able to see a moose in the snow sounds impossibly exotic to this little ol' Aussie from downunder!!

And a blizzard?? Yes, there ARE people in the world who have yet to experience such a thing! Hope it was all good ...

  40. She was a beauty Barb, ha, and I get a kick out of feeding my little squirrel at the back door! Your wild creature encounters are much more dramatic than mine:0

  41. That is so exciting! And a little scary she was staying around so close. Great photos!

Ski season starts here the day before Thanksgiving. I have been neglecting my blogs but hopefully I'll start up again once we are skiing.

  47. Catching up -- what an array of wildlife! Love the mooses! (That doesn't seem right -- is that one of those singular plurals, like deer?) A friend's son works at Breckenridge -- happy for the snow. Me? I'll hold off as long as I can!

  48. Loving the moose pictures. I have seen them up in Yellowstone, but somehow I never knew they lived as far south as Colorado.

And vacating the area was a good idea - I hear they are not the most pleasant-minded creatures, to put it nicely. :)

  49. Oh Barb, your photos always take me on an adventure. Wow, a real life moose :)
