LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Backcountry Snowshoe, Breckenridge, CO - Our World

We hiked into the backcountry on our snowshoes yesterday to avoid weekend/MLK holiday crowds.
My 20 year old Redfeather running snowshoes

I use my lightweight snowshoes for hiking when the snow isn't too deep.

Peak 10 viewed from Beaver Pond (self portrait)

We hiked along the south flank of Peak 10.

Lehman Creek with only a thin skin of ice

Not even the tiniest trees are covered by our meager snow.
Snowpack is 33% below normal.

Bob stepped carefully across the snow bridge.
Luckily, it held us!

Willow bushes stand starkly without a winter blanket.

Up and up we go, along the creek.
Except for the crunch of the snow and the icy gurgle of the stream:
Silence

If you've never snowshoed, you might enjoy this 49 second video.

OMG! The video rocks. The stream sounds and the crunching of your snowshoes/skies whatever on the snow. It's fantastic. Thank you Barb. I doubt I'll ever live near anything like Colorado. I'm sorry your snowfall is meager but to those of us in the lower lower Midwest it's huge. Carol

Thanks for the video Barb. We are going to Yosemite next month (heart of winter) hopefully to see snow and play with snow shoeing. This would be a first for me. Getting ready for my gear, and maybe some snow chains.

The lighting on your photos at high elevation is awesome!

Barb my dear, your little video brought tears to my eyes. With all the kangaroos in the world, i miss snow-shoeing, real winters and the flora and fauna of the Northern Hemisphere. Thank you for the crunch and gurgle.

Although I've never tried it, I know I'd love snowshoeing, and I keep meaning to buy a pair of snowshoes (preferably at the end of winter when they're on sale and I might be able to afford them). I love that video!

I still remember my first snowshoe hike. I had a hard time keeping a wide enough stance not to step on them and would wind up face down in the snow. Those old snowshoes were a lot wider than the ones today.

Wow, what you may think is just an afternoon walkabout for you would be a grand adventure to me. At that altitude I know that I'd be sucking lots of air, and loving it.

You guys are awesome.

We learned to snowshoe last year in Island Park, Idaho, near West Yellowstone. We were in a timeshare, and we snowshoed right off our deck!

I hear there's lots of snow (comparatively), in Seattle, where we live, but we're in Sedona, Arizona to get away from the rain! Go figure.

What an odd Colorado winter. We have much more snow than usual at our elevation. On a north-facing slope, I was up to mid-thigh, and I was wearing snowshoes! But, up a bit higher, and on the western side of the Divide, the story is dismal. I hope that the latest storm is bringing you some snow so that you can enjoy your new skis!

My husband met some people from Breck at our local ski area. They were traveling to find the snow!

Beautiful and peaceful photos, as always. Thank you.

The video is delightful! I liked snowshoeing, but I like beach walking better because of the no snow. ;) Yet it is just gorgeous. Just need More snow.

And what a wonderful world you live in. It has been years since I snowshoed Barb but I still have them, one never knows. It is very cold here, -39 with wind chill factor.....big hugs:-)

beautiful place. And informative about those snoeshoes. We could have use for them the pase 2 winters. But not this winter. We have almost no snow at all.

Loved the crunch, crunch, crunch, Barb! Your 'meager' snow is more than our inch of snow, which the 50F temps have now melted.

I have old fashioned snowshoes in the cellar, the ones with the long tails. So I have snowshoed, and I have a question....where in the audio was the sound of rasping and panting???

Wow, Barb! This must have been stupendous. Few people live in such a gorgeous place. To your credit, you seem to take advantage of it daily!

Aw, you've done it...made me miss (not winter) but a day hiking through snow covered woods.

I imagine the air is wonderfully fresh in the snowy forest. Nothing is as comfy or useful as a twenty-year-old pair of hiking shoes. I am impressed, though, that you didn't wear a cap in the cold to go with them. :)

Hi,Barb!
You have captured my heart. How pleasant the stream sounds are! I love the crunching of snow shoes, splendid blue sky and the snow as well. I am sure we are embracing this time together!!
Have a great day,my friend.

Looks like a beautiful walk through the snow ! In Belgium it hasn't snowed yet, it was always to warm. Now the temperature is more winterlike, but no snow in view !

We had a little snow this weekend and are due for a big storm tomorrow night!

I love the photos...

I think I kinda sorta knew you were from Lancaster, but it's hard to say, my memory isn't what it used to be!

Anyway, I am from a little town in NE PA called West Clifford and I grew up near Elk Mountain Ski Resort..

I guess once a mountain girl, always a mountain girl. Of course what I thought were mountains back in the day are really just hills compared to the mountains I live in now!

You make me want to get out the snowshoes and go for a walk in the woods, Barb! Looks like you guys had fun. I wish you more snow.

it looks as though you got a wonderful day for your walk! looks like such a wonderful thing to do. maybe we will get enough snow to do this, ha.

I so enjoyed your post! The snow is wonderful even if it is less than normal! Loved the video too! Here, we have had snow fall three days in a row -- just a few flakes that melted before or as it hit the ground. Tonight late, we might get some snow but I don't have much faith in it. Thanks for your snow photos!

I love your small snowshoes. Very little snow here - we got some yesterday followed by freezing rain and rain, so not much accumulated. I haven't taken out my snowshoes this season.

It looks so beautiful in the mountains!

With less sow, I wonder what the rivers will be like in the spring and summer.

I've never tried snowshoes but those who have say it's wonderful! I'm not winter's fan, but you make it look fun!

Hi, Barb! I feel fresh and crisp air. I’d love to hear the crunching sound of the snow and the icy gurgle of the stream! As I’m not accustomed to snowshoeing, I’ll also hear the sound of my breaths as I trod on. Thank you for taking us along with you to this beautiful snow world and for the video.

Wow, Barb, I didn't realize your snow was so far below normal. Gosh we need that snow so we don't have another dry summer. It is still gorgeous up in your neck of the woods, though! Loved the video! I'll have to email you one I took from skiing- fun stuff!

Looks like a beautiful, quiet day away from the crowds. I would have been a little worried about the snow bridge with the warm conditions, but the creek doesn't look very deep. At worst, I guess you might have gotten wet feet.

As a real sound sensitive girl, the city occasionally unnerves me and often drives me batty. I gasped out loud listening to your video. Creaks and crunching snow does good for the ears!
