LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Skiing by Wolf Moon - Skywatch

At high altitude in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, a deep indigo darkness falls after sunset.

Since there is very little light pollution,
the wilderness behind our house is an impenetrable mystery at night.
That's when animals hunt and forage, unseen and undisturbed by humans.

Only on full moon nights, is there a pale, ghostly light.
During the Wolf Moon on January 9,
we ventured into the forest after dark on our touring skis.

We followed the tracks of coyotes and foxes
as our breath formed halos in the frigid air.

With the Wolf Moon guiding us, the only sound was
the sing-song buzz and creak of our skis cutting through the icy snow.

We stayed outside for two hours, enchanted by the moon's glow.
By the time we saw the lights of our house through the woods,
we were ready to leave the forest to the animals.
We wanted to sit by the fire with mugs of hot chocolate
and talk about our full moon adventure.

Visit Skywatch Friday to enjoy other skies from all around the World!

What a great adventure, Barb! I would love to have been there. I've never heard of a wolf moon, but, as they say, live and learn.

Fantastic shots! I am going to have to check out this sky watch site... so many people participate. Hope you had a lovely day today-- after the snowplow woke you up.

The photo of the forest is magical looking.

I saw a glimpse of the moon the other night as I walked into a room and was just awed by its beauty. I can only imagine how wonderful your night adventure was under its glow.

Many years ago, my first husband and I would snow shoe at night. It was always just a magical experience. I admire that you are still having such wonderful adventures.

When you come in the city you probably think it smells. The air must be so pure where you live.

The 3rd picture is my favorite, with the moon casting shadows on the snow.
Sounds like a great adventure, worthy of many reminiscences over mugs of chocolate.

Just beautiful shots and how amazing it must have been to glide through the semi darkness.
I too am wondering if there are some creatures out there that might think you would be a tasty morsel.

Reminds me when we would go skating or sledding at night when we were kids living in Newfoundland. Magical! :)

Lovely! It must be magical to enjoy the moon;s light with no interference from city lights. I guess so since you were enchanted for two hours!

Oh, Barb, you transport us to a place that is real, yet otherworldly. As always your photos are amazing; these, though, have such a mood and elegance. I gasp.

A wonderful adventure, beautifully captured.

I have just read your previous post; it speaks to me like no other. For some years now I have had a heart defect which has made me into a timid, cowardly creature, always afraid. I must take your words to 'heart', perhaps i too can become brave again.

Thank you for visiting my blog, I would not have found you otherwise.

I’m inspired by these dark, quiet, and almost silent images with your words, Barb. Making my way by moonlight in the forest would be “thrilling” (in dual meaning). Both good and evil spirits of mountains and rivers might be lurking in the darkness. I see a hag with disheveled hair in the third image. “Light pollution” is a new word to me – thank you.

What a peaceful adventure. It was also very cold that night here so I can imagine the creaking of your skis. I didn't know that it was called the "Wolf Moon". I'll have to look that up.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment that you left at my blog. Thanks for thinking of K when you were out in the same world that she loves so much.

I am jealous. To be out for 2 hours at your altitude with the moon, a wolf moon no less, sounds like heaven. I do love those Native American names for the full moons. Wonderful photos.

Only where there are few man made lights can we appreciate the light of a full moon.

Barb,
Oh, I enjoyed your world of the mysterious wolf moon! Barb, am I right that I associated the wolf moon with a werewolf?
What I envy the most is "there is very little light pollution". I have missed the star-filled night sky and Milky Way for a long time.
Beautiful indigo blue!!
PS
I really want to read "East & West".
Best wishes,
keiko
