The dangers of life are infinite, & safety is among them. Goethe
To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness. -Bertrand Russell, philosopher, mathematician, author, Nobel laureate (1872-1970)
This above all: to thine own self be true, / And it must follow, as the night the day, / Thou canst not then be false to any man. -William Shakespeare, poet and dramatist (1564-1616)
We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person. -William Somerset Maugham, writer (1874-1965)
Society is like a lawn, where every roughness is smoothed, every bramble eradicated, and where the eye is delighted by the smiling verdure of a velvet surface; he, however, who would study nature in its wildness and variety, must plunge into the forest, must explore the glen, must stem the torrent, and dare the precipice. -Washington Irving, writer (1783-1859)
"Set aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while: 'Is this the condition that I feared?'" -Seneca (1 BC - AD 65)
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. - Albert Einstein
You get your intuition back when you make space for it, when you stop the chattering of the rational mind. The rational mind doesn’t nourish you. You assume that it gives you the truth, because the rational mind is the golden calf that this culture worships, but this is not true. Rationality squeezes out much that is rich and juicy and fascinating. - Anne Lamott, (Bird by Bird)
Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could; Some blunders and absurdities crept in; Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, writer and philosopher (1803-1882)
The secret of good writing is to say an old thing in a new way or a new thing in an old way. -Richard Harding Davis, journalist and author (1864-1916)
Words are the small change of thought.
-Jules Renard, writer (1864-1910)
The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.
-Marcel Proust, novelist (1871-1922)
A word is not a crystal, transparent and unchanged, it is the skin of a living thought and may vary greatly in color and content according to the circumstances and the time in which it is used.
-Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease.
-John Muir, naturalist, explorer, and writer (1838-1914)
I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.
~John Muir, 1913, in L.M. Wolfe, ed., John Muir, John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, 1938
On the mountains of truth you can never climb in vain: either you will reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow.
-Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher (1844-1900)
to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you've held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.
"The Thing Is" by Ellen Bass, from Mules of Love.
In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.
When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body's been.
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.

Wake up, wake up, Barb, and welcome back! We've missed you. From the looks of these photos, you've had a very merry Christmas. May you also have a lovely 2012, one that will surprise you with joy at every corner.
I hope your holidays were wonderful and your New Year will be too. Glad you're back. Carol
Barb, I thought of you today when I looked at my western shelter belt. You told me once how much you enjoyed seeing the trees leaf out. Today they were blowing in the wind. We have no snow whatsoever so I am not wearing my snowflake earrings yet. All the best to you and yours in 2012. I love the photograph of you with your Grandchildren. The artwork behind you is amazing. Can you tell me anything about it? xoxo from the prairie.
I've missed you during your quiet month (in blogville). But, it appears that it was a very good month for you, between being out in nature and playing with your grandkids. That makes me smile.
Welcome back. I missed you. I hope you are well. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year! I can't wait to see what gallops through 2012 for you!
I got a Kindle for my birthday and soon after came to your blog to look at your book list. I'll be checking the updated version =)
Welcome back to Blogland, Barb! Looks like you had fun with your cute grandchildren. I looked over your interesting book list and found several to check out. I'm getting my first Kindle :)
Welcome back to blogland. How nice to spend time playing with family.
happy 2012 barb! great to have you back- and thanks for stopping by the virtual studio! looking forward to sampling some of the books.
What a lovely post - so glad to see you back rested and full of energy. Looks lovely and cold where you are!

And Happy New Year! I wish 2012 will be the happiest and best for you.
I’ll spend 2012 smiling with you! Your heartwarming shots make my heart warm and happy! How lovely your grandchildren are!! In your photos, the most delightful moment is condensed.

So glad to see you back Barb! :-)

It is about time. You have been missed. Good to see you used your down time so wisely.
No better way to spend the end of the year and the start of a new one, than with Grandchildren and out in Nature! Woke to our first snowfall of the winter!
Wishing You and yours a Wonderful New Year of Contentment and Good Health, Barb!
Happy New Year to you - may it be a year of good health, happiness and the joys of nature. Glad you took the top to enjoy what really counts in our lives.
Welcome back! and Happy New Year.
Welcome back! I am getting back to blogging too, Barb. So far so good .. two blog posts in two days :-) Remember how much snow we had last year? I think western PA was trying to compete with your neck of the woods, last year, in snow amounts. The 2011-2012 winter season has seen very little snow. Today is our first major snow storm of the season. There was no snow on the ground yesterday. The weatherman is calling for 8-12 inches of snow through Tuesday. Perhaps my husband will get to use the snow shoes I bought him for Christmas.
Good to have you back, Barb! Beautiful photos as usual and a very sweet post. Blessings for a peaceful and fulfilling new year to you and yours.
Welcome back! Happy New Year and may many blessings follow you again this year.
Hi Barb,
Thanks for your New Year's wishes. You do cast a long shadow through your marvelous blog. Your sidebar alone is an inspiration. I admire your list of books read. I am also an avid reader--but without the discipline to summarize the books I read. I'll be looking over your list to see which ones might interest me. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Glad to have you back. Do you need to rest after a month with the young ones. Have you been able to ski at all? I wonder if this weather weirdness will continue into 2012?
We are sunny, windy and warm here. It feels like April.
A note on the way.
Such beautiful New Year wishes--and photos. May you enjoy all the blessings that a New Year can hold.
Our best wishes to you and your family for 2012.
Greetings,
Filip
I am glad you had a perfect and refreshing blog-break and that you had some wonderful time with your family. I love the whole post, but especially the last paragraph because it expresses so well how I feel about reading and using my imagination. How fortunate we were to have parents who gave us those gifts to be passed on to our kids, grandkids, and (in my case, great-grands)!
What a wonderful break you had. Amanda looks so happy on her mount and that picture of Caden reminds me of Mark, wedging through the moguls when he was learning to ski.
Michael and his family have now gone back home. Sorry to say I did not find time to take a single picture of him while he was here, he keeps Grandma busy. Later this month we will go south to watch him for a few days and perhaps I will do better.
Happy New Year, Barb! Your photos always show what you celebrate. I do celebrate the same things, Barb.
Thank you for the New Year wishes on my blog. I’ve been away from blogging except sporadic commenting as I’ve been quite busy with my daughter’s moving and preparations for the New Year. In Japan, we celebrate the New Year for three days. I kept smiling with family and extended family, visiting or being visited.
52 books in a year is really something. I think my reading time got replaced by blogging because it takes more time for me to update and comment in English. That’s one of important things I feel missing. Though I read three Japanese books in a week when I was in hospital, I need reading time at my home. Health comes first. Wish you good health, love, and peace throughout the year.
Yoko
Thank you for the nice comment on my blog. I enjoyed looking at the photos on your post, what beauty surrounds you! What a lovely family you have and I bet you smile alot when you see and think of them! Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year Barb.
I'm impressed that you read 52 books in 2011! I love to read too.
I'm glad your back to blogging.
All the best in 2012!
Beautiful photos, especially the soft pink of that first one. And watching a youngster learn to ride is a special pleasure, I think.
When I have a little time, I'm going to look through your book list. I'm always on the lookout for another good book.
Happy New Year, Barb! I'm glad you had a long, satisfying blog break.
Hello, Barb.
Welcome back! It is so glad to see your beautiful photos and read your words again. Seeing your grandchildren always reminds me of our grandchild living far away from me.
I embrace 2012. Wish you and your family good health and joyful New Year.
Tomoko.
Happy New Year to you too Barb! I was thinking about you the other day when I heard about all of the high winds that you had. I hope everything was alright. I took a long break too. Today is my first day visiting everyone!! Love Di♥
Each word and each image really spoke to me. Thank you for that.
Lovely as always. A wonderful refuge and so uplifting.
May this year bring you so many blessings.
so lovely to see you with the children you love and in nature and your beautiful photographs.
lovely 2012 to you ~
Happy New Year, always love your photos and seeing what your grandchildren are up to!
That hoarfrost photo is a killer. I can tell you've had a splendid time, and that, my friend, is what a good break is all about! Welcome back!
Hi Barb, glad tidings, best wishes for the New Year!
I am back and rejuvenated/refreshed!
What a beautiful family picture and great gathering of a great and athletic family. Caden is showing off, nice shot!
Breck is beautiful all year long. Hope your weather warms up for your hikes, but in the meantime enjoy the slopes!
What a nice compilation of thoughts and photos. It covers such meaningful aspects of our lives.
I take horseback riding lessons (don't know if I've mentioned that before), so I always love seeing pictures of horses and people riding - even little people. :)
As a fellow book lover, I paged down your list. Nice titles. I've read Room, The Help, and Still Alice. Will probably read Lisa Genova's other book this year.
The time will come when I'll have more reading time.
Glad to see you back! No snow at all here and it's getting a little scary. We are supposed to get a few inches tomorrow, keeping our fingers crossed...
I just started my little granddaughter riding on my old gelding..it is hands down the most fun this old lady has ever had!!!!
xxoo,
RMW
Hi Barb - just wanted to thank you for visiting my blog and commenting and also to say how much I'm enjoying yours, esp your marvellous photos! A book a week - bravo - that's a worthy goal in anyone's book (no pun intended) See you around the web? S.E.Ingraham
Thank you for visiting my blog and for leaving such a kind comment. Yours looks beautiful, and I look forward to reading it.
Thank you for the gifts you give to us, Barb. Happy New Year.
Hi Barb! I am up way too late, but it is Sat night and luckily I can sleep in for a little bit. Looks like you are keeping busy with the sweetness of the little ones and snow! AWESOME! but keep it where you are ok lol! The weather here has been chilly and that's ok, but I hate that it is still dark at 5:30 when I get home, I am looking forward to the longer days when I can start riding my bike and not being in such a hurry! I am feeling the cabin fever lately.
So happy you had a restful and fun-filled break, Barb. Glad to see you back. ;)
A beautiful post for my Sunday morning inspiration. It seems you have lots of fans who eagerly awaited your blogging return. Happy New Year wishes to you.
Nice glimpses of your December! (Look how much you were missed.)
I hope you are enjoying the New Year! I will get back to blogging one of these days.
you are so right! to spend time with the beloved once re-charge us with energy, good mood and everything else we need!
