LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Where Did Winter GO - Breckenridge, CO

Rain in Breckenridge in January?
Drizzle in town and purple cloud over mountain just after sunset, 1/18/12
I moved to Summit County, CO, from PA over 22 years ago.
Normally, by January, we have so much snow it's impossible to navigate the forest trails without snowshoes or skis.
Bob walking to town on Burro Trail
However, temperatures hovered in the 40's for the past several days.
This morning, we walked four miles roundtrip from our house into town to get the mail.
We wore lightweight jackets and running shoes.
Barb on bridge over Lehman Creek, still running ice-free
It feels like spring in the middle of winter!
It's nice but not what you'd expect at high altitude in January.

Supposedly, a blizzard is heading our way.
I don't think my snow dance is working, but I still haven't given up hope.
Is anyone else having this weird weather?

  1. Yes weird weather in Louisville. 7 tornadoes in one day with lotsa damage. We go from 20-30's to 60's in a few hours. It's a roller coaster. Carol

  2. We've had a winter of mild weather ranging from the mid 40's & low 60's, with a few days of temps in the teens here and there, with no snow to speak of yet. Last night a light ice storm moved in and at the moment it is 22F. My daffodils were up 2 inches 2 weeks ago, which is very early for them!

  3. Uh, we seem to have gotten your snow in the Pacific Northwest. Feel free to come and collect it as soon as possible. :-)

  4. Remember when I wondered if the weather this winter was going to be as weird as the rest of the year?

    I think it is.

My guess is that the town is not very busy right now.

  5. It's still quite beautiful, Barb. Hope you get your snow. Glad to see you out and about, regardless of the weather.

  6. I read this in many peoples blog. It is too warm for the time of the year but you still have snow.

    Greetings,
    Filip

  7. We haven't seen any rain or drizzle this winter here on the Palmer Divide at 7,500 feet elevation. But we're short on the snow, and if you go down even a few hundred feet lower there's no snow at all. And it's looking mostly dry for at least the next week! I've heard it's not a good year for the skiers and what you're saying validates this.

  8. We've had so little precip this winter, that many of the snowplow operators are having to find other ways to make ends meet. Very strange indeed!

  9. Oh yes! We had 3 hours of snow followed by three days of rain so far. sigh Snow is all gone. Those who went to bed before 10 and got up after 8 didn't see any snow at our place. They just missed it. I walked around late at night and got a few photos and then shoveled sidewalks around our place and went to bed but the rains came and I woke up to it all melted. I am so sad.

I hope yours doesn't all melt away with the rain too.

  10. I love that top photo. And the one of you standing on the bridge. I predict that February will be a big snow month for you folks. Let's see if I'm right? We ended getting closer to 16-18 inches out that last storm and more on the way. Just you wait Barb.

  11. And we've had snow in Victoria! A foot or more. Although this morning we woke up and it was all gone. Don't worry Barb, it's only January. There are still a couple of months of winter to go.

  12. Your trail to town looks delightful, although I understand you want to be on skiis. I'll add to your blizzard dance as long as it doesn't fall here.

  13. I didn't know that you moved here from PA too! I grew up there.

Very very warm here for the past couple of days. Yes, odd weather. I hope that you get your blizzard. We are not forecasted to get more than a few inches of snow but at least it will get cold again. Love that first photo of the beautiful mountains!

  14. Our Winter here in NW PA has been mild this year. We've had only a couple storms with measurable snowfall. That snowfall amounted to 4-8 inches of snow. We have snow on the ground now, but warmer weather is forecast. The temperature is kind of like being on a roller coaster with its steep climbs and steep drops.

  17. Hi Barb
Sunny and warm for winter here in England ... I just had breakfast overseen by a blackbird that seems to be permently fixed to my fence.
Great blog, wonderful photos, its amazing how we all get together these days.
I enjoyed the snow of Colorado in 2010 ...

  18. Hi,Barb.
In my area, I enjoy the mild weather, but it has been heavily snowing in the northern part of Japan especially this winter. People are busy shoveling on their roofs. You are wearing a beautiful pink jacket. It suits you, Barb! I like it.

    Have a good week ahead.

  19. What a beautiful place to walk.
I would love it after all the traffic in the city.

  20. Hi, Barb! This winter’s weather seems to have been weirdly warm in some parts of Europe and North America as far as I know. I haven’t learned what is behind it. Our winter in Nara is typical winter, cold and sunny with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees F by day and at freezing level at night. It is forecasted we are having cold spell with the highest about 40 F. I know how you’re uncomfortable with that weather. The snow looks completely different from that of the last year. Hope your snow dance will work.

  21. This is a mild winter I think. We never get very cold weather here in Georgia but we have been in the mid-60s for a while. Yesterday we were under a tornado watch – we usually don’t get these in winter. I enjoyed your moonlight walk. I also loved your post of January 8 – it is very positive and heartfelt – I think that nature is a healer and living in such beautiful surroundings would also bring peace. I hope we’ll still get some snow in February, who knows…

  22. Too darn warm here. A fellow geocacher reported that he got a tick the other day. In January!

  23. Definitely weird weather here. Weather above freezing with rain followed by flash freezes, making everything icy. Not nearly enough snow. I'll try a snow dance here, too, but not sure it will help.

  24. You bet. 18 degrees one morning and 70 degrees the next afternoon and no snow.
The snow may not be deep but you still have a lovely place to walk.

  25. Hmmm, I could have sworn I commented before. Yep, weird weather here, too. I love your pics. Hope you're not buried under a blizzard right now.

  26. It's a strange winter here, too, Barb. We had rain yesterday, and I've never seen that in January. The storm over the last couple of days brought much-needed snow to the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains. I hope you got some of that for your ski slopes.

  27. Yes! We went over a month without any rain...not good for Winter for us. We have rain in the forecast tomorrow, then temperatures *return* to the 80's later in the week. Uncomfortably warm and dry for sure.

Off to rain and snow dance...

  28. Not to worry dear Barb, your winter is right here in Morinville and we are taking very good care of it until it goes home again. We are warming up a bit today and we have had snow for a few weeks now. I really don't mind as it only a couple of months until Spring arrives. Enjoy the wonderful week ahead.....:-)Hugs

  29. No Barb we haven't got your snow over here, tis hot, high 30s and very heavy showers today so you can imagine the humidity...but the town is amazingly green and vibrant and I am enjoying it. Green gives me a fix like an endorphin shot!
I hope you get your winter sport snow but the change must be pleasant to get out walking...

  30. Love the pictures, but yeah, strange. Weird weather -- another name for climate change? Which would be a better thing to have call what's happening than 'global warming'. (Just my 2 cents worth.)

  31. We were having the same thing over here in Summit Co. Utah, but this weekend we were slammed with snow and more is predicted for tonight. Maybe the snow dance gods got a little confused about where the snow was supposed to go?

  32. Wonderful winter shots. So much snow all around.

  33. I love the purple mountain and cloud shot, Barb! Gorgeous. Here in California we are experiencing rather strange weather: cold one day, in the 60s the next. Who knows what Mother Nature has up her sleeve in the future?
