LIfe at High Altitude in Colorado

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

Finding My Focus

I came to Denver yesterday for a DR appointment
I heard the wind rattling the windowpanes in the night.
When I woke this morning, a wet snow clung like foam to all surfaces.
My only sojourn outside was to shovel the front walk.
I was disappointed that the city streets and sidewalks were so sloppy. I'm having my stress test with the Cardiologist on Monday. I hoped to run today to practice for my time on the treadmill.
The house is silent when I'm alone. Sometimes, I comment on something I've read and realize my husband isn't here to answer. We don't have TV in the city, so there's no background babble. I like interludes of solitude and quiet.
This is an old chest I have sitting right inside the front door.
I practiced focusing on different aspects of it.
It's dilapidated.
Paint is chipped.
Drawer pulls are loose.
Nothing fits together as it should.
I love its look. It has character.
In late afternoon, I lit the candles and tried focus again.
It's harder than I imagined to focus on a flickering candle flame.
(Much easier to make the fruit the focus.)
I ate dinner alone by candlelight.
Now, I'm going to read until bedtime. Maybe I'll stay up late into the night. (Or more likely, I'll be asleep by 10!)
Tomorrow is a new day, perhaps calling for a different focus.

  1. Those quite alone nights can do a world of good at times Barb. I thought your photos were very inspiring, the chest was beautiful. Aged to perfection I'd say!
Quite solitude can clear one's mind. I hope your stress test goes well despite the practice time!
    Love Di ♥

  2. I love that old chest -- it's a stunner. Sending you good wishes for your appointment. Sometimes I just love being alone -- and sometimes I divert myself with sound (my tinitus sometimes gets a little wonky without background sounds) but sometimes it's just nice to have a glass of wine, a good book and a cat on the lap. So, I guess I do have someone to talk with!

  4. I'll be thinking about you for your stress test. Please let us know how it goes. These photos are fantastic Barb. That old chest is gorgeous. The blue candle is so nice. And that dinner looks fantastic. When I saw the news this evening, they showed a storm going across the front range, and I wondered if you'd gotten it. Apparently so. Have a wonderful evening. Carol

  5. Wow, you are very well focused, and the subjects have very strong character also to perfection. They are all beautiful. Beauty is really in the eye of the beholder, and that old chest might not be very functional anymore, but very functional for your purpose! Lovely.

  6. Solitude is difficult for me these days. I don't want to be alone. Usually, I love my solitude. You have shown us some great photos that came out of your attempts to focus. I love the look of that old chest. Your dinner looks wonderful.

  14. The snow is stressing you out even before your stress test!

Your focus on your out of focus photos are great! Love the bokeh effect.

Wishing some flying colors with your visit to your handsome DR.

  16. You do solitude so well, Barb and I bet the stress test will go just as well also. The chest is lovely with it's aged teal blue finish...I have a small dark chest of similar construction, but I like the wabi sabi look of yours better.

  18. What a lovely chest. You captured the details so well. I prefer the focus on the fruit with the flame diminished. Something peaceful about that. Thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog.

  26. We had a windy night, too. The windowpanes rattled.
It's interesting how different something looks when we focus on the parts instead of the whole. I hope the stress test goes well. I'll bet you ace it.

  27. Nice photos, Barb, each rich in color and mood. Glad you found your focus, but, to be candid, I doubt you ever lost it.

  28. We had high winds also which caused my ISP to collapse for the day.
Loved the pictues of the old chest. I can so relate, I am a bit dilapidated, nothing fits as it should but I do have character.
    Wonderful shots per usual.

  33. As I get older, I appreciate older things more - their imperfections earned over time echo mine. I love the way you have so clearly demonstrated focus and taking the time to do so. Definitely something I have to practice more.

  34. I love the meditative feel to this post and your amazing pictures. The first one of the chest with the cup and chopsticks (?) takes my breath away. I hope your appointment goes well.

  36. Hi, Barb! Sometimes I like to play with my camera experimenting different shots when I’m alone at home. Your old chest holds a beauty of natural progression, I love it. I like to look at the wavering flickers of candle light in a relaxed way. Last week my focus was my father-in-law, this week my daughter, but actually mostly alternately in the cycle of life. Walking on a slippery street is stressful. Take care and have happy solitary time.

  39. Lots of interesting objects to view and capture -- but I would have a difficult time too, focusing on just one thing with all this beauty around me. :)

  40. I love this old chest, it has beautiful hardware, and such amazing potential. Are you thinking of refinishing it, or is the essence of this old piece its present character?

  41. I like the metaphor of focusing your camera or focusing your attention. You made some very pretty photos from the things inside your house!

I have my mother's "trunk" that she took to college and then for foreign study in France. It doesn't look anywhere near as beautiful but I ought to take it out and see if I can beautify it.

  42. What a beautiful old chest, full of personality. I'm asking myself where it originated from. China? Japan?
