A Colorado Blue Sky - Skywatch Friday

There's nothing quite like a CO blue sky in the winter.

Today, my friend Barb S and I skied with a "Rat Pack" of guys.

We skied up high in bright sunshine under a cloudless sky.

The contrast of the stark white peaks against the vivid blue sky draws the eye upward.

I think it also lifts the spirit.

Snow Dance Worked! Our World

We went out to play on touring skis while it was still gusting and snowing.

Sometimes snow pillows dropped on our heads.

Tried for a vintage look here (after all - I AM vintage!)

The foot of new snow was delightfully fluffy.

We have scales on the bottom of the skis.
In new snow, the scales make it easier to climb.
They grab and hold so we don't slide backward.

Yippee! The most fun is gliding downhill. (And if you fall, new snow is nice and soft.)

Where Did Winter GO - Breckenridge, CO

I moved to Summit County, CO, from PA over 22 years ago.
Normally, by January, we have so much snow it's impossible to navigate the forest trails without snowshoes or skis.

However, temperatures hovered in the 40's for the past several days.
This morning, we walked four miles roundtrip from our house into town to get the mail.

We wore lightweight jackets and running shoes.

It feels like spring in the middle of winter!
It's nice but not what you'd expect at high altitude in January.

Supposedly, a blizzard is heading our way.
I don't think my snow dance is working, but I still haven't given up hope.
Is anyone else having this weird weather?

Backcountry Snowshoe, Breckenridge, CO - Our World

We hiked into the backcountry on our snowshoes yesterday to avoid weekend/MLK holiday crowds.

I use my lightweight snowshoes for hiking when the snow isn't too deep.

We hiked along the south flank of Peak 10.

Not even the tiniest trees are covered by our meager snow.
Snowpack is 33% below normal.

Skiing by Wolf Moon - Skywatch

At high altitude in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, a deep indigo darkness falls after sunset.

Since there is very little light pollution,
the wilderness behind our house is an impenetrable mystery at night.
That's when animals hunt and forage, unseen and undisturbed by humans.

Only on full moon nights, is there a pale, ghostly light.
During the Wolf Moon on January 9,
we ventured into the forest after dark on our touring skis.

We followed the tracks of coyotes and foxes
as our breath formed halos in the frigid air.

With the Wolf Moon guiding us, the only sound was
the sing-song buzz and creak of our skis cutting through the icy snow.

We stayed outside for two hours, enchanted by the moon's glow.
By the time we saw the lights of our house through the woods,
we were ready to leave the forest to the animals.
We wanted to sit by the fire with mugs of hot chocolate
and talk about our full moon adventure.

Reflecting - Two Years after Heart Attack

On January 8, 2010, I had a heart attack. Unknown to me, I tore the inside of a major artery leading into my heart while skiing the previous day. The resulting blood clot caused the heart attack (read about it here). I've learned that my torn artery is a very rare occurrence called spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). It affects predominately women, most often happening to young women just after childbirth. Others are affected after strenuous exercise. In still others no cause is found. There is no way of predicting who will experience SCAD and if it will recur, so people who have had a tear must live with no real answers as to why and if it will happen again. Some do not survive the first episode. My cardiologist says I'm very lucky. We surmise that mine tore while struggling to free my skis when I fell in deep snow in the bowl off Peak 10. He says if the heart attack had occurred at the time of the tear instead of many hours later, the outcome may have been different.

For two years, I've been healing, both physically and emotionally, from that tear and heart attack. I went from a fit, healthy 65 year old to a frightened, diminished woman. Prior to the episode, I took only supplements. Afterward, I filled a pill box with all the meds I needed morning and night to heal my heart and keep more blood clots from forming around the stent that was placed to repair the tear. Every twinge felt like the end of my life.

Close observation and listening are my strengths. These traits have served me well during the healing process. Over months and now years, I've paid attention to my body, built my strength, and listened to both my body and to my emotions. I made a decision shortly after the heart attack to eventually try to get off pharmaceuticals, which have their own negative side effects. I'm fortunate to have great doctors who spend time answering my questions and guiding me. At the end of November, with my cardiologist's blessings, I was weaned from the last of my drugs. Beginning the new year, my body finally feels like my own once again.

Each of us is on a path from birth that leads finally to death. I can't speak for others, but for at least a year after my heart attack, I worried constantly about the journey, afraid that it might come to an abrupt end. Finally, I learned these lessons: Worry doesn't lead to a better or a happier life. Stressing about something out of human control is futile.

So, now I try to focus on the positive: I exercise strenuously every day, eat healthy foods, maintain close, caring relationships with others, and pause to meditate and give thanks. Life is never on hold - it's what's happening right now. I'm trying to release the fear I harbored after the attack so I can be present NOW and really, truly live a life of meaning in the time I have left.

On this second year I'm pausing briefly to reflect, thinking of all the people who have lifted me up, carried me when necessary, and allowed me to stand once again on my own two feet. Many of you who have become friends through this blog have shown me kindness and given me hope. Thank You! My heart is full today with gratitude. Thankfully, it's beating strongly.

Today, I updated the books I completed in 2011 (on sidebar) and realized that I've read 52 books in one year. Reading is one of my greatest pleasures. I'm thankful for words, for the ability to communicate, and for the creative world of the imagination. These gifts were given to me when I was a child. I try not to take them for granted, and I try my best to gift them once again to others.

I've been off-line for awhile doing what I do best:

Playing!

Specifically, playing with Grandchildren.

I've been

taking time to smell the flowers,

trying to see the world through a child's eyes,

embracing wonder wherever I find it.

We celebrated a birthday -
Pop Pop's 67th found us on the slopes.

Being outdoors made us smile.

On November 23, LIVE and LEARN also had a birthday.
Here is the first photo I posted 3 years ago:

I took it on the trail behind our Breckenridge house.
There was only one "snowflake" footprint.
It seemed magical to me, as though the snow fairy was leaving me a message.

Through the Blog, I've met and forged relationships with people all over the world.
Over 35,000 folks have visited the Blog since that first post.

I'm continually amazed and gratified
by the talented and good-hearted people I encounter.
My world has expanded because of you.
I continue to LIVE and LEARN.
For that, I say "Thank You!"

Into the Forest - Altar Stump - Thankful

Earlier in the week, I cross country skied for the first time this season. I was amazed at the hundreds of deer tracks crisscrossing the forest. I've never seen so many tracks along with scuff marks in the snow where the deer paw to get to the grass.They're probably on the move because it's hunting season. Since I've never seen a hunter in this area of the forest, perhaps they instinctively feel safer here. They were Ghost Deer, their tracks the only proof of their existence.

My destination on this day was to the "altar stump." I check it periodically to see if the treasures are still there: 3 pieces of quartz and a blue Stellar's Jay feather. It's deep in the forest. Most wouldn't give it a second look. In fact, each of us has our own special places that bring us peace or energy or resolve.This happens to be one of mine. I pause while looking at the stump and quiet my mind. I sometimes focus on a certain person, hoping for their strength and resilience, sending them good thoughts.

My friend, Mary, is leaving today on one of her jaunts to other parts of the World. So, on the day I skied, I focused on her well-being as I stood amid the deer tracks with the wind gusting through the tops of the towering pines. Then, I thought of each of my Grandchildren, sending them love and confidence to bolster them as they meet their everyday challenges.

Do you see the many faces on the stump? Your eye probably goes to the cat-like one at the top, but there are several more if you look closely, some upside down or sideways. The snow inside the stump is covering the quartz and the feather like a fluffy white hat. The treasures will be safe through the season of snow.

Is there a place you like to go to count your blessings and to think positive thoughts? For some people, it may be a religious sanctuary, for others a place in their home or an outdoor space that quiets their spirits, and for some, Nature might offer a catalyst for spirituality. I believe that anytime goodness flows outward, an energy is created that makes the World a better place. Even in the middle of a snowy forest, a feeling of warmth enters my heart and calms my mind as both best friend and family occupy my thoughts.

I hope all who celebrate an American Thanksgiving find much in their lives for which to be grateful. I'm already counting my blessings. Family and Friends (including many Blog friends) are on my thankful list. I hope wherever you are in the world, you take time to count your blessings, too. Think of all the positive energy we'll create!

Loose As a Moose

Yesterday, looking out the windows of our house,
we saw a large female Moose grazing at the edge of our property.

When we thought she'd moved away into the forest, we went outside for our daily walk.

Alert for movement, we hiked up the back trail through an area of towering old-growth trees.

Suddenly, a chittering squirrel signaled danger.

Ms. Moose was well-camauflauged amid the tall Lodgepole Pines.

She turned to watch us while I used the telephoto to take her portrait.
Moose are known to be grouchy about intrusions into their space.
Before she decided to teach us a lesson, we moved away from her, up the trail.

We ventured onto Peak 9 at the ski area where snow coverage remains sparse.

This morning, we started a new ski season on Peak 8 (where they've made snow).
Tonight, we await a winter storm that may bring high winds and heavy snow.
We have the fireplace lit. The house is cozy. We have plenty of food.
We're doing our snow dance. We hope for a blizzard.

Fall Weekend in Denver - Our World

Denver had a very brief fall this year.

It snowed several times in the city the past couple weeks.
Limbs were broken and leaves shredded.
Many trees were prevented by cold weather from showing brilliant fall colors.

We've spent most of the fall at our mountain home.
But as a treat (for them and for us), this weekend we took our oldest Grandchildren to the city.
We attended a performance of The Lion King.

The show kept us on the edge of our seats - both children and adults were mesmerized.

Amanda loves to dress "fancy"
(more than Grammy does...).

Afterward, Ben ordered root beer.
(Grandparents sometimes bend the rules a bit.)

Early Sunday morning, we played at the center-city Skateboard Park.

Jack scootered.

Ben rode his board.

Amanda (after a bit of scootering) settled down with a book.
(This is what Grammy also did as a child - and still does!)

Jack's red hair glowed in the sun's warmth.

It mimicked the colors of this one bright tree still showing off for fall.

As you've probably surmised, Grandchildren are a very important part of my world.

Transition

It's transition time.

There is still the sound of rushing water as I walk the trails.

But, filigreed crystals of ice are starting to form,
making ever-stronger bonds toward the middle of the stream.

The ice on still-water ponds looks thick and milky, though I wouldn't attempt to walk across it.

In fact, where I do need to cross, I can no longer balance on the ice-encrusted logs.
Instead, I must try to find a place narrow enough to jump from solid ground to solid ground.

I love the patterns the ice crystals make.
(Do you see the little snow hearts in the bush and on the ice?)

The change from fall to winter is happening rapidly.

I'm still managing my 4-5 mile walks, but I'm going more slowly now.
I must admire and inspect and respect the ice.

This morning, after about 30 hours of intermittent snow, we woke to a glittering world.

The blue spruce balanced fluffy pillows (which sometimes dropped unexpectedly) as we passed underneath.

The sun shone golden on Lehman creek.

The frigid water formed ice around the rocks. The low was 1 degree (F) overnight.

The ski area was busy making its own snow to add to that already on the ground.

We walked the 2 miles into town to get our mail. A bit of fall color still remained.

Returning home, I inspected my gardens.

The Dianthus wore a wizard's hat.

The Shasta Daisy looked lovely against its jeweled backdrop.

The seed pods enchanted me.

Waldo assured me that today was the optimum time.

He is never wrong.

I spent a happy hour flinging seeds mixed with sand.
I scattered thousands of hopes and dreams for next summer's blooms upon the snow.

Remembering - Our World

Today, we climbed up Peak 9 to visit the spot where some of our friend, Frank's, ashes are strewn.

Since our snow a week ago, we've had cold but sunny autumn days.

The chair lifts on Peak 9 wait in the stillness.
Breckenridge Ski Area is scheduled to open Nov. 11. Obviously, more snow is needed!

We hike upward through fall grasses.

Looking to the east, Baldy Mountain seems to be covered with a sprinkling of sugar.

Finally, we reach the steep dropoff leading to some of the expert trails Frank loved.
Across the way is Imperial Peak which we skied with Frank last winter.
We call his widow from this spot. We share some memories.

Finally, Jeb, James, Bob, and I start downward. We go for a pizza and beers (mine root beer, which I prefer).

Frank would be smiling in approval at everything we saw and everything we did on this perfect Colorado fall day.

Mining Ruins and Ghost Towns in Summit County, CO

It's looking a lot like winter already in my back yard.

This morning when I walked, it was 18 degrees.
I must wear heavier layers, plus gloves and a fleece headband.
I try to walk 4-5 miles every day.

I watch my footing. Ice is forming on the creeks and on the logs I use to cross.
As I walk, I think of long-ago residents and wonder about the hardships they endured.

Through the fall, I hiked along Pennsylvania Creek, Illinois Gulch, and Boreas Pass to explore old mining ruins and ghost towns.
Summit County, Colorado, is rich in mining history. Ruins from the past are everywhere.

Dilapidated cabins help me imagine life in the 1800's.

This one room structure has an old iron wood stove and a rickety ladder leading to a small sleeping loft.

Ghost Town at Dyersville

The cabins and mines are located near water.

In the summer and fall, water for drinking, cooking, and occasional bathing would be easily accessible.
But in the winter when thick ice forms, getting water would be hard work.

The cabins are tiny and provide just enough space for cooking and sleeping.

Imagine having to use these "bathroom" facilities in a blizzard with frigid temperatures!

Mining structures were erected close to the cabins. There was no commute to work.

Boilers still overlook the slag heaps.

History lies abandoned in the forest.

Sometimes, I think I see the ghosts of long-dead miners, still whispering about their dreams to strike it rich.

Random Thoughts - Snow!

Hello my friends!

Several of you have checked on me via E-mail because I haven't posted in awhile. Thank you for being concerned about my well-being. I'm feeling quite fine! The truth is I've been too busy enjoying Life to write about it! We had a visit from my friend, Mary, and her husband last week. It snowed while they were here! In just a few days, fall changed into winter at altitude. Since then, we've had balmy, sunny days, but a bit of snow still remains on the ground around the house. Perhaps this will be our winter's base - but I'm waiting to sow my perennial seeds until I'm sure.

We've had some frequent visitors to our yard in the past couple weeks:

This tiny fox shows up in the late afternoon.

It pretends to be nonchalant, but sneaks hopeful glances at me.

Got any fox snacks?

Finally it moves on to find more productive "hunting" grounds.

Snort! Oh, it's only you, Barb! You startled me.

Small herds of deer arrive late in the day.

I used will power when these were blooming - but surely you can't begrudge me now!

They're very interested in what's left in my garden.

It seems that Delphinium and Jacob's Ladder are especially tempting.

After a slow spring start because of all of last winter's snow, my gardens bloomed nonstop until the snow fell. I've made a garden slideshow which I'll keep on the sidebar a couple weeks for anyone interested. Special thanks to my Blog friend, Christine, whose album, FRAGILE BEAUTY provides the background music.

Fall is a brief but spectacular season in Summit County, CO.

Aspens glow against the blue Colorado sky.

Bright hips ornament the wild roses.

Grasses in shades of sienna sway in the breeze.

As aspens quake, gold flutters down.

Fall is the bridge between summer and winter.

The landscape changes day by day.

Fall's beauty is radiant but transient.

Waldo smiles in approval.

We're celebrating fall at high altitude.

I'm Thinking of You - One Good Thing - Random Thoughts

Last night, the temperature dropped to 22 degrees.

Even when skies are blue and the sun is shining, I wear layers both inside and out.

I took a beautiful hike up Illinois Gulch this week.

All along the trail, Nature smiled in shades of yellow.

As I walk, I think.
Sometimes, I think of you.

Yes, I mean YOU - specifically you.

After nearly three years of blogging, I "know" many of you.
Somehow, we are connected.
I hope for your well-being.

I suspect that somewhere in the world
someone I've never actually met is also thinking of me.

I send my hopes for your health and well-being.
I wish for solutions to your problems.
I ask that your sorrows become less.
I celebrate your successes and encourage your dreams.

I believe in you and want only the best for you.

Do I think that positive thoughts have power?
Well, yes - I do.

Colorado National Monument - My World

With temperatures hovering just above freezing,
we left our home in Breckenridge to drive westward for about 200 miles.

We traveled toward heat and high-desert landscapes.

The CO National Monument was named as a national park in 1911.

Spectacular rock formations rise 2,000' above the valley floor.

Remote canyons are formed by the erosion of rock over millions of years.

The sheer-walled canyons and massive sculptures are colored by iron and other minerals in the sedimentary rock.

In late summer, a few desert wildflowers are still blooming.

The cactus flowers had withered, but the tubes were bright red.

Hardy shrubs and bushes like sagebrush, rabbitbrush, and broom grow in rock seeps and along ditches.
Only the most hardy trees can survive the heat and lack of moisture.

The stormy skies produced a bit of rain that dried as soon as it hit the rocks.

A collared lizard winked at me as I climbed upward.

Flowers nodded in the shifting air currents along The Serpent's Trail.
We gained 700' of elevation and hiked 4 miles round-trip.
It's still dry and hot (80 degrees F) in the high-desert of the Colorado National Monument.

Lower and Upper Crystal Lakes (Mining Ruins at Both)

Remember last August, when Helen and I hiked to Lower Crystal Lake and tried unsuccessfully to find the Upper Lake? This week I did a solo hike to Crystal. My goal was to find the trail that climbs to the second lake.

The sun was just filtering through the pines as I started from my house.

After steady climbing, I left the evergreen forest for more open vistas.

A profusion of wildflowers filled the alpine meadows just above 11,000'.

Monkshood grew among the willow bushes.

In wet areas, I began seeing Gentians.

Twisted Gentian

Lower Crystal Lake is in an idyllic setting.

But, I knew I had to keep moving to reach the upper lake.

I climbed the switchbacks toward the saddle between Crystal Peak (13, 852') and Peak 10 (13,633').

When the trail became scree, wildflowers still grew among the rocks.

I admired their tenacity as I carefully continued upward.

Finally, I was rewarded by a spot of turquoise. Can you see it there in the distance?

Upper Crystal Lake is a well-hidden treasure.
Remains of a defunct mine are strewn over the hillside.

Continuing to the far side of the lake, I looked back and admired the perfect stillness and isolation of the scene.

The high tundra was still green from snowmelt. Soon new snow will fall onto the old.

Arctic Gentians, harbingers of winter, grew in profusion.

Leaves of succulents were bright red from colder temperatures.

I wanted to explore some more, but suddenly I became aware of storm clouds.

Storms above tree-line are very dangerous.
I started down immediately.

I stopped briefly at the Miner's Cabin (dating from the 1800's) when I reached Lower Crystal.

Peeking through the crumbling logs, I could see the gathering clouds.

Feeling tired but happy, I continued walking downward toward home.
I hiked the last 2 miles in a light rain listening to distant thunder.
The hike was 8.5 miles and took me about 7 1/2 hours.
I gained and then lost 3,000' in elevation.
Visions of a secret lake continue to put a smile on my face.

In July, our son, Gregg, rode in the Leadville 50 Mile Mountain Bike Race.

He was still smiling at the end when he was congratulated by his team.

Both our sons rode in the 3 day Courage Classic in July to raise money for Children's Hospital.

My husband, Bob, rides nearly every day. Biking is his favorite sport.

45th Wedding Anniversary!

Bob and I celebrated our 45th Wedding Anniversary on August 14.
We began "going steady" as Sophomores in High School.
Seven years later, after graduating from college, we married.
So, altogether we've been a couple for 52 years.

As you can see, I really haven't aged much since the day I walked down the isle in 1966.

Though I'm actually 6 months older than Bob (he enjoys telling people he married an "older woman"),
he looks a bit more his age.
All that wind and sun have taken a toll!

On the other hand, I've always tried to keep myself dewy and fresh - the years have been good to me.

Tonight, the celebration continues at a center-city restaurant.
I only hope we can avoid the Paparazzi!

Black Powder Pass in August

Barb, Helen, and I hike Black Powder Pass, starting at the Section House on Boreas Pass (11, 500').

We follow a stream drainage through the evergreen forest.

Mornings at altitude are chilly. Temperatures overnight fall into the mid-30's.

Climbing above tree line, we enter a lush alpine meadow.

Snowmelt and summer rains produce extravagant wildflower displays.

All around us, views are spectacular.

Distant meadows are yellow with Ligularia, a species of alpine sunflower.
White and red Paintbrush lend color to the palette.

The trail ends just below the peak of Boreas Mountain.
The snowfields remain all summer.

We continue up the tundra following rock cairns.

Here's the view from 12,159'. We are very small in the vastness of the high peaks.

Hiking back to the Section House, we watch a storm approach.
Black Powder Pass is listed as a moderate hike. Because the trail starts above 11,000' and much of the hike is above tree line, weather and temperature are variable. There is no trail beyond the saddle and cairns mark the way to the top of the pass. I have always found abundant wildflowers along the stream and in the meadow leading to the saddle. Views are magnificent!

Breckenridge in Summer - My World

Breckenridge, a National Historic Town, was established in 1859 at the height of Colorado's Gold Rush. It's located in a valley rimmed by the Ten Mile Range to the west and the Continental Divide to the east and south. A bustling resort, especially in winter and summer, only 4,500 people live permanently within town limits.

In summer, the town takes advantage of a very short growing season (only 30 days without frost), to dress in colorful blooms. Blue skies predominate. Breckenridge records about 300 sunny days a year. Temperatures in summer rarely rise above 80 degrees.

Hanging plants and window boxes beautify businesses, many housed in restored historic buildings.

This tiny vegetable garden is flourishing along Main Street..

Buildings vary from old mining structures

to intricate Victorians.

The Blue River flows through town from its origin on Hoosier Pass, 12 miles to the south.
During the summer, the Breckenridge Music Institute performs at the Riverwalk Center.

The old gold dredge, now a restaurant, still sits on the Blue River along the Riverwalk.

Biking is a popular summer pastime for both tourists and locals.
Endless mountain bike trails and a well-maintained bike path linking other mountain communities appeal to both young and old.

Hiking is a wonderful way to experience Nature first-hand.

A Tribute

Our friend, Frank, died on July 21. He was one of my Husband's best friends. Frank was an athlete, a philosopher, a listener, and a learner. He was a kind and admirable man. On the last night of his life, he became agitated, wanting to speak to my husband. His wife called, and Bob got on the phone. At first, Bob couldn't understand what Frank was trying to tell him, but suddenly, quite clearly, Frank said,

"I'm on the bike."

Those were the last words he uttered to anybody.
Frank died at dawn the next morning, in his own bed, surrounded by his family.
We imagine him pedaling into the sky, waving goodbye to all of us.
The thought makes us smile through our grief.

We were not alone!

Our foxy friend found us so boring she pretended to sleep.

To Florida and Back

We spent weeks this spring watching the sun set over the Pacific.
Just to be fair, we thought we'd spend some time watching the sun rise over the Atlantic!

We braved the heat and humidity to walk the beach each morning.

Brown Pelicans scanned the surf for breakfast.

Nesting site of Loggerhead Turtle, Melbourne Beach, FL

Loggerhead turtle nesting sites are common along a 20 mile stretch of beach starting at Melbourne, FL. Beach-front hotels and homes are under light restrictions during the months (March through October) when the turtles nest and hatch. The huge female turtles come onto the beach in darkness to deposit their eggs before returning to the ocean. Each circular "nest" may hold 80-120 eggs. In 10 weeks the hatchlings will attempt to scurry back to the sea. Only 1 in 1000 will survive to adulthood. The adult females return to their original natal sites to deposit their eggs. Each daybreak during our stay, there were new tracks and nests along the shoreline. In 2010, over 14,400 nests were counted along this stretch of beach.

The real reason for our visit was to join with family and friends to witness a marriage. Our nephew, Mitch, met Amanda while teaching in a program for autistic teenagers. Their wedding was a wonderful celebration of love and commitment. (Also, it entailed lots of dancing and fun!)

Now, we're back in Breckenridge. The snow has finally melted in our yard. (However, the high peaks and flanks of the mountains still have a blanket of snow.) Wildflowers are everywhere. The delicate Fairy Slipper Orchids waited to bloom until I returned. My perennial gardens are green and growing. I've begun to hike and bike. I'm so very happy to be back in the mountains. When I wake and see the unfolding landscape from my house, I think:

"Life has been good to me."

I hope you're finding at least one good thing to celebrate each day, too.

Waterfalls have tremendous physical and spiritual power.

For the second time in my life, I walked behind a waterfall. Seeing and hearing the thundering water up close was exhilarating.

Oregon offered us lush, green landscapes - and a lot of moisture.
Waking to more rain the day after our waterfall hike, we made a decision to head home.
We needed a bit of blue sky and some sunshine!

We drove through the rolling hills and farmland of Idaho.

Finally, the sun shone in Utah.

Back in Breckenridge, CO, Lucinda B. Rabbit was on duty, guarding our property.

As you can see, the snow is still drifted in our yard. But - no rain and the sky is blue!
We're had great adventures on our travels, but it's always good to be back home.

Oregon has kept us busy.

We've explored rainy forests.

We've admired delicate wildflowers.

Now, we're in Portland, enjoying the city.

There is a youthful, energetic vibe.

People have been kind and thoughtful. This morning, a homeless man tried to help us figure out the Max train and city transit system. When we finally had our day tickets, he waved and shouted as we boarded, "It's best to know where you're headed!"

We were headed for Washington Park and Hoyt Arboretum.

We also visited the tranquil Japanese Garden. I thought of my Blog friends from Nara.

Coming back, we took the bus and then walked through the city to our hotel.

We're ready for a treat before bed.

Tomorrow, we'll venture up the Columbia River Gorge.

We walked the solitary beach this morning at daybreak.

It was cool and slightly misty.

I was so busy looking at what washed up on the sand,

I almost missed something special:

It was awesome!

It was so large, I had to photograph first one end and then the other.

Later, we climbed a huge dune.

I stood for a long time overlooking the vast blue of water and sky, feeling thankful.

The N. CA coast is twisty and dramatic.

A wet, cool spring turns the hills green.

The gnarled bark is a testament to the beauty of age.

The oldest living beings on Earth, they have endured fire, flood, and pestilence.

In the presence of the massive trees, we're humbled.

Now, we're staying in a small beach town on the Oregon coast.

We're exploring tide pools.

We're watching the changing colors of sky and sea.

This heart is for you!

Windy West Coast - Point Reyes and Bodega Bay, CA

San Francisco was just waking when we said goodbye to Marin County.

The wind was whipping by the time we got to the National Seashore at Point Reyes.

The wildflowers wouldn't hold still. They rocked and rolled in time with the wind.

The surf's music was wild and loud. The gusts caused sensory overload.

We stopped for the night in Bodega Bay. Gusts whistled and groaned outside our door.
In the morning, thinking we had lost the wind, we climbed the trail at Bodega Head.

Unfortunately, it found us!

The trail rose to ever-expanding views of the cliffs and the Pacific.

We searched the ocean for migrating Gray Whales, but the choppy water made spotting difficult.

Wildflowers waved frantically beside the path.

Some spilled over the cliffs to the sea.
Tomorrow, we'll run this trail again before leaving to drive north on Route 1 toward Mendocino.

Perhaps the wind will keep us company.

We've spent the last several days in Sausalito and San Francisco, traveling back and forth by Ferry.

Every spring for the past 6 years, we've visited Pacific Grove, CA.

The Ice Plants bloom profusely along the ocean.

Glorious pink is everywhere!

When the day is windy or overcast, the plants protect themselves by staying tightly closed.

They form a thick pink carpet trailing off the cliffs toward the sea.

They're the color of Happiness.

Tomorrow, we'll watch the start of the Tour of CA Bike Race from Seaside before driving to Sausalito/San Francisco where we hope to finally have clear weather for some bike riding of our own.

Cloudy with a Chance for...Belly Dancing!

Sacramento skies were rain-soaked and sullen during our stay.

Luckily, the Tower Bridge, which we could see from our room, provided a bright counterpoint to the clouds.

We ran along the scenic American River without getting wet.

It was pouring as we watched the bike racers finish at the Capitol.

I didn't let a little rain dampen my spirits.
(Look at those rhododendrons!)

Rain followed us today to the Monterey Peninsula.

We were drawn into the warmth of Dimitris Greek Bistro in Carmel.
It is a tiny, intimate space.
The owner played his Outi for us. We clapped and cheered as a woman got up to belly dance in the isle.

I've decided I want to be the type of woman who would spontaneously belly dance...in front of complete strangers.
Did I mention she was wearing a red dress?
Oh - to be that confident and at home in your body!

From the restaurant, we walked to the sea.
The stark landscape was lovely.
Now back in the hotel, rain pelts against the windows as darkness falls.

Surely tomorrow sunny California will live up to its reputation!

On Saturday, we walked on the shore of Lake Tahoe and enjoyed the views.

It was cool but sunny.

We watched bike teams practicing.

Ouch! The icy breath of winter returned by Sunday.

The first leg of the Tour of CA was cancelled.

We're in Sacramento, CA. We just walked back from dinner (with an umbrella).

Don't worry, I'm still the same bossy, loud, naughty, and completely marvelous

I've been extremely busy keeping the household running smoothly.
While Barb fritters away time experiencing ordinary moments,
Lucinda B. Rabbit has obligations.

You remember Justy T. Puddledunk and Iggy B. Ursus?
They continue to need a great deal of guidance and bossing.
They adore me, of course, and I tolerate their affection....to a point.

I barely have time to rest between planning meals and running everyone's life.

Barb and Bob are leaving in a few days for their annual spring trip to the West Coast. As you know, I normally travel with them, but this year I have my paws full with all the fans who are clamoring for my Life Lessons. I may have to stay here and work, work, work while Barb and Bob have all the fun.

So Proud of My Children is a sculpture by Nicholas Kadzungura, a Zimbabwe artist.
It inspires me. I visit it often, standing quietly in appreciation.
It's part of the permanent collection at Denver Botanic Garden.

The Mother holds a bouquet. She is regal but serene.
Her children carry books. They are the future.

You can see the sculpture rising above the landscape as you approach.
In all seasons, it is surrounded by grasses that wave gracefully in the breeze.

For me, the sculpture evokes Mother Love.
Hope and Pride are suggested.
Protection is implied.

I cherish memories of my own Mother, now gone.
I gratefully celebrate the Mothers of my Grandchildren.
I give thanks for all Mothers who strive to make a better world for their Children.

While new growth is everywhere in Denver,

Breckenridge remains buried in snow.
The resort has set a record for snowfall at over 511" with more snow in the forecast.
The ski mountain closes on Easter Sunday.

In the foothills of the Rockies, Denver basks in spring.
Warmer days and a bit of rain have ushered in blossoms and flowers.

It's possible to relax in the sunshine and believe that winter is truly over in the city.

However, more snow is a certainty for the mountains and a real possibility for the city this weekend.
Even last year, the crocus had to withstand a little April snow...
Winter still hasn't lost its grip.

I came down from the mountains to Denver to visit spring.

My pear tree is blooming just outside the front gate. It smells heavenly.

The Botanic Garden is less than a mile from the house. I walk there for a spring flower-fix. You'd think after months and months of snow, I'd be color-starved. Yet, my favorite spots in the Garden are subtle and quiet.

I love the arbors.

Their form and function intrigue me.

I'm drawn to a chiseled stone bench with Pulsatilla tucked into the corner.

My favorite flower this spring is the Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla Vulgaris).

It's one of the first wildflowers to bloom after the snow melts in the high mountains of Colorado. I want to plant some in my gardens in Breckenridge.

I've decided I'm in love with shade plants. White and cream flowers seem to glow with light under the trees. I like them better than the gaudy tulips. Perhaps I'm snow-blind.

Look at this shy little bell-shaped Fritillary trying to hide in the grass.

Don't you love the way the sun turns the bamboo golden? (Also, that secret bench is perfect!)

The Crab Apple trees are putting on their show.

In the Japanese Garden, shape, color, and reflection lift my spirits.

The watery reflection of the Red Bud attracts the Koi.

Creatures bask in the sunshine.
So do I.

Rocky Mountain Spring

Pink clouds greet a new day.

Evergreens stretch and thaw in the sun.

Aspens glow as buds emerge.

Ski trails beckon.

Fresh tracks await.

There is no lack of snow.
Breckenridge Ski Area remains open through April 24.
Most tourists have departed.
Locals enjoy the quiet of a Rocky Mountain Spring.

Boreas Pass in Spring

This morning, I decide to investigate if the snow is packed enough for running along Boreas Pass Road.

The old trail was first used by miners in the early 1800's and eventually widened to accommodate stagecoaches by 1860. Finally, in 1882, a single gauge rail bed was finished, crossing the pass and connecting Breckenridge to Como. Now, the rails are gone but historical remnants of both mining and rail travel remain along the old road which is part of the Continental Divide.

The road is gated in winter and used extensively by snowshoers and cross country skiers. In the spring, the snow on the trail becomes frozen and packed so that it's possible to walk (or run) without potholing.

Boreas Pass Road climbs along a ridge at a gentle 3-4% grade.

Views to the south and west are spectacular.

The town of Breckenridge lies in the Valley of the Blue below the ridge.

There are extensive views of Breckenridge Ski Area and the Tenmile Range.

Aspen groves form a tunnel along the trail. The trees have buds and in about a month will sprout lime green leaves.

Red rock cliffs contrast with the snow and the sky.

I walk in solitude listening to birdsong. Golden willow bushes frame the view.

I'm smiling.

Next time, I'll wear my running shoes.

Spring Break in Breckenridge, CO

Our Grandchildren spent part of their school break with us.

We still have lots and lots of snow at high altitude.

To date, we've accumulated 462".

The snow is almost to the top of the swing.

Luckily, our Grandchildren aren't tired of snow.

They find plenty to do.

Play is their work.

Snow is their friend.

On sunny days at high altitude, it feels warm.

They unzip and go without hats.

From morning to night we're busy.
Now we're alone once again.

The weather has changed. It's snowing and blowing.

The house is very quiet. We're resting by the fire.
As much as a foot of snow is expected by tomorrow.

It's spring at high altitude.

Synecdoche - What Do You See?

Sometimes I like to let the part stand for the whole.

I like the visual effect of a tighter composition.

I like to encourage your interpretation.

I want you to think "what's that?"

I've been reading lots of research and books about the brain lately. The brain is truly fascinating.

Did you know that your brain routinely interprets just pieces of information sent from your senses?

Using selective attention, the brain discriminates between what is perceived as important and what is irrelevant.

Our brains also interpret based on expectancy, past experiences, culture, and biological makeup.

What do you think this is?

Here it is again in a larger scene.

The brain is a master at creating a whole from fragments of information.
Sometimes we get it wrong - we interpret signs and signals sent to the brain as something they're not.

Two people looking at the same thing might see something completely different.

Often "right" or "wrong" is just a matter of how our brains interpret a situation.
It would be great if we could remember that the next time we feel affronted
because someone doesn't "see" it our way!

Spring in Denver, CO - My World

In the mountains of CO, it may say "spring" on the calendar, but there is still plenty of snow on the ground.

Ninety miles away, in Denver, it's a different story:

Bulbs are blooming.

Bees are drunk with nectar.

Delicate flowers somehow withstand fluctuating temperatures.

Succulents form bright colonies.

Thorny Cacti bask in the warm sunshine.

Golden switches of Willow sway in the breeze.

Hidden beauty abounds.

As I watch spring unfold in the city,
I remember that in Japan a crisis continues.

Thoughts of Hope

I am thinking of the people of Japan.

I visit the Japanese Garden in Denver Botanic Garden on a quiet afternoon
much like the one just before the earthquake and tsunami hit Sendai.

We never really know from moment to moment where our path might lead.

I enter through the gate thinking of my Japanese Friends.

I can feel the serenity of the landscape.

Who can imagine the sadness and fear of the Japanese people?

I sit quietly.

Snowdrops bloom at my feet.
I send thoughts of hope to my Blog Friends in Nara.
I wish for their continued safety in the aftermath of tragedy.

A Confession

You think you know me, BUT...

I have to confess:
I'm a stairs junky.

I love steps!

While everyone else is posting about flowers, birds, landscapes -

I'm awed by all kinds of stairs:
rocky, moss-covered, steep, spiral, ancient, or modern

Wherever I roam, steps get my full attention.

Here in Blogland, I enlarge some of YOUR photos if there are stairs.

What is it about them?

Maybe a sense of possibility.

An aura of mystery.
The thought of a journey.
A feeling that you can start low and end high.

This is one of my all-time favorites.
I bet you think that's a rose in a vase up there on those steep steps.
It's what you HOPE I'd photograph.
Well, it's actually litter - an aerosol can.

But - I love how it looks on the stairs!

Responsibility - A Reminder to Myself

Child's Play

When our Grandchildren visit us in the mountains, we spend lots of time playing.

After an early breakfast, we head down a ski trail to the lifts.

This winter, Ben, Jack, and Amanda can go up high.
The views from 12, 840' above sea level are panoramic.

My granddaughter is dwarfed by the landscape.

When our son, Jim, does an aerial stunt, the boys don't hesitate to try one, too.

At home, my rock garden makes a steep winter climbing wall.

I go onto the upper deck to warn Jack not to break the window with his sled.

What a great smile he has!

Finally, I lure them inside with a promise of hot chocolate.

Pop Pop challenges them to endless games of Parcheesi and Checkers until dinnertime.

Lucinda doesn't mind helping with homework.
Even the adults are exhausted by 8PM!

Winter Snowshoe Hike to Francie's Cabin - My World

Have you ever attempted to hike in winter when there are feet of snow on the ground? It's not just a matter of walking out the door into the wilderness (though the wilderness IS right out my door). Some time-consuming preparations are necessary.

I check the temperature and dress appropriately. On this particular day, it's only 14 degrees, so several wicking layers (both top and bottom) are necessary. My outer shell and snow pants are lightweight but water and wind proof. I wear snowshoes with neoprene booties that fit tightly over my running shoes. Gaiters fasten over the booties and reach up my pants to my knees to keep me dry. Down gloves, a soft neck gaiter, and a fleece hat with ear coverings help protect from the cold. The hat is attached to my coat with a small bungee cord. I can either wear it or take it off quickly and let it dangle if I start overheating.

I carry a backpack with 50 ounces of water and packets of food - orange slices, nuts, an energy bar, and "Gu" which is mainly sugar and caffeine (yucky) and consumed only if I start seriously lagging. I stuff an extra pair of gloves and another top layer in the pack just in case. I always carry emergency items that I hope I won't need: chemical hand and toe warmers, medical supplies, matches, a pocket knife, and extra sunscreen. Of course, my small camera and cell phone come along, too, though the cell is out of range for most the hike.

Burro Trail

As I start up the trail, the pack feels very heavy because I haven't worn it since summer. However, after I loosen the chest strap a bit I forget about its weight. Instead, I feel exhilaration at being on a solo adventure. My destination is Francie's Cabin, which is located in a mountain cirque above tree-line just off Peak 10. I know the trip there will take me over 2 hours, depending on how often I must stop to rest.

Hare Tracks

Leaving my property, the trail immediately begins a gentle incline. I notice that a coyote has visited very recently. His paw prints are etched in the inch of new snow that has fallen this morning. It's too cold to remove my glove for a photo. I walk in silence, noticing animal tracks and stopping occasionally to catch my breath. Soon, I generate enough body heat to keep me comfortably warm.

Lichen on Aspen

The wind is blowing the tops of the tall Lodgepoles, but I feel protected in the depth of the forest.
In a white world, bright lichens provide a stunning contrast.

Old Man's Beard

In one area, trees are covered in Old Man's Beard.

Finally, at the junction of the Burro Trail and Crystal Lake Trail, I stop and remove the pack.
It's time for a treat before starting the steep climb upward.

Crystal Lake Trail requires more effort. I make myself take at least 20 steps before stopping to lean on my poles for 5 breaths. High altitude puts a strain on the body. There are roughly 40% fewer oxygen molecules per breath, so to properly oxygenate the body, breathing rate (even while at rest) has to increase. The heart and lungs both work harder to pump needed oxygen to the cells. Since I live at altitude, I'm acclimated to less oxygen. However, people who arrive to exercise from sea level must be very mindful about altitude sickness, which can be fatal.

Above 11, 000', a shrub is already showing lime-green buds.

A small trickle of water allows moss to grow under a protective hood of snow.
However, Crystal Creek, which rages to the side of the trail in the summer, is silent under its blanket of ice and snow.

Finally, at the end of a tunnel of trees, Mount Helen comes into view. Just as I step into the bowl above treeline, the sun breaks through the clouds.

Francie's Cabin is part of the Summit Hut System. It is situated near timberline at about 11, 300', in the Crystal Creek drainage on the flank of Peak 10 of Colorado's Tenmile Range, a ridge of ten peaks that runs north and south in Summit County, CO.

I don't approach too closely, respecting the privacy of the people who are renting the hut.
However, their view of Crystal Peak, Quandary, and the Mosquito Range is magnificent.

It took me 2 hours and 45 minutes to reach my destination, so I can't tarry. I must turn around and start down immediately. As soon as the sun drops lower in the sky, the temperature will also plummet. I want to be snug in my house before the light dims too much.

Approaching home, I'm thinking about hot tea and a seat by the fire.

I'm tired but happy. The hike took me less than 5 hours.

My World

My Two Worlds

When I'm in Denver, I walk miles and miles.

I ramble through posh city neighborhoods and along scruffy urban streets.

I stroll through zoos and museums. I sit at cafes and people-watch.

I spend time with Grandchildren.

The city is a whirl of activity.

But, it can also be quiet, tranquil.

I've spent the past 10 days in spring-like temperatures in Denver, CO.

Now, I've migrated back to my mountain home.

Snow continues to fall at high elevation.

In 90 miles, I've moved from an emerging spring back into winter.

I'm welcomed home by icicles and snow.

I think I have the best of both Worlds.

Talking to Wildlife

I've had a strange week.

Along the banks of Cherry Creek,
Ducks wrote me a note I couldn't quite decipher.

It led me to this Rabbit
who told me a secret about Lucinda.

Lucinda said she was too busy to chat.

So, I followed Peacock

who introduced me to Goose.

He suggested I check with Penguin
who had a knowing smile on his face.

Penguin pointed the way to Ram
who was kibitzing with Goat.

Goat demurred but felt Crane might help.

Crane honked in surprise, but thought I'd best try Hippo.

Hippo delivered the message:

Accept yourself.

Find the beauty hidden deep within.

You are more than enough.
